Forums - Gaming Discussion - is the 8th Gen Already dead?

I'm afraid so. The PS4 was announced a month ago, and it hasn't even sold a single unit yet. Microsoft never even announced a next Xbox, so presumably they've dropped out of the console race altogether. And the Wii U, well... we all know about that one.

It's over, guys. Cellphones, here I come!

Thank you for being you.

With the hardware jump being less of a leap then the SD to HD type thing last gen it was inevitable. Most of the early Ps4 / 720 games will have been developed for current gen systems and then 'ported up' with better graphics etc - basically just the PC version on higher settings. It's a double-edged sword, fewer exclusives will hurt it, but the Ps4 is going to have Assassin's Creed IV, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty, FIFA etc all before the end of 2013 at launch. These are behemoth franchises that typically sell around 10m a piece... compare that to Resistance and Motorstorm for the PS3's launch and then the whole 'PS3 has no games' thing and well... it's probably a better situation to be in.

PS4 / 720 exclusives will come in time as companies want to get maximum marketshare from the new consoles and as current gen software sales tail off. I'm sure first party stuff will be pushing that for sure, and I'd imagine EA, Activision, Ubisoft etc have stuff ready for E3.

The generation hasn't even started completely yet and it should already be over now? I mean, the PS4 was just announced and the Xbox successor is still to be announced.

How can something be dead that wasn't even born yet?

yep,WiiU wins after all,who would have thunk it after all the chitter chatter

i'm sticking with what i have

                                                                                                                                        Above & Beyond

Yeah, could be a while. Saints Row, Battlefield, MGS all skipping next gen. Only games which are cross gen are COD, Watch Dogs and Assassins Creed right now. People are just too happy with this gen, and why shouldn't they be?

It'll be rough for the Wii U, PS4 and NextBox, that's for sure.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

best post of the day. lol

I'm amazed at how slow people are on the uptake.

Yes this is the case. The current generation with their technology based reviews pushed the market into a corner. To be able to get good review scores and good sales, you need a big investment and its a big risk that needs millions of sold units to turn a profit.
Now, on one hand you have a market of about 140 million people with the PS3+360, and you have a next gen market upcoming that wont have more than 8 million at best until the end of the year (this includes both platforms). Its an optimistic prediction has these systems will launch at about 400 euros price or more. Most wont be willing to upgrade at that pricce, so it will only sell to the early adopters, just like what is happening with the Wii U.

Now think... if you are a developer/publisher the answer as to wich platforms you MUST have your game on its quite clear. You can then choose to port/support to the next gen systems to try and stimulate the market growth of those consoles, but if its anything like the Wii U, and i think it will be, current gen is still gonna stick around for 2 more years, until those userbases can grow enough that its profitable to release your games on them and safely make a profit. Its gonna be mostly first party games on these first 2 years, and those will decide who probably wins the following gen.

Battlefield is releasing next gen. MGS probably too. And when was a new Saints Row confirmed? You forget quite a few announced next gen games too like Destiny, The Witcher 3, Diablo3, etc. There are likely several more unannounced games as well.

Looking at current gen software and hardware sales, people don't seem that happy with this gen; certainly not too happy. They especially won't be too happy when all of the next generation consoles actually release.

Battlefield is confirmed for PS4 and MGS hasn't been ruled out. You're definitely reading too much into the OP. PLENTY of people are ready to move on.

Its also not ruled out for the Wii U *chuckle*.

You misinterpret "plenty" for "the hardcore".

Can't miss out on 150+ Million Userbase while you only have to reduce the detaillevel and stuff.
Most of those games will sell millions on the PS360 and will make up for the development costs...
You can't just stop making games for 150+ Million people cause the PS4 and NextBox are maybe coming in ~ Novemeber 2013.

There are a lot of transition games announced.Nearly every game is a transition Game right now.
AssaCreed,WatchDogs,Diablo,Destiny,Battlefield 4(yes it is PS4 confirmed),Metal Gear surely too cause it is running on their new NextGen Engine and they won't waste it on outdated CurrentGen and a lot of others are for PS360 and PS4NextBox.
Most of those games already run on NextGen Engines and just will come with ultra low detail for PS360.95% of the "gaming community" don't know anyway how a maxed out version would look like.
Just look at the Witcher 2 or Battlefield 3 - Most Console people don't know how much difference there is between the console and PC Version.
They have no clue but what do they have?MONEY publishers will try to get

We will probably have to wait at least 1 year before games for both Gens won't get released anymore.
At E3 we will probably see the first few trailers of PS4NextBox Only Games but they won't be out when those consoles get released.
The only true NextGen games we will see in the early months of the PS4 will be 1st and 2nd Party.
3rd Party will try to make as much money as possible as long as they can cause not everybody will directly buy a PS4NextBox.
