Yes, the problem isn't the (if true) $100M budget itself, but Square-Enix focus in single player games. They need to make more online multiplayer games like Final Fantasy XIV and Dragon Quest X, that will save them for sure.

So true.

Analysts... why do they even exist? They give no good advice.

And for the record... Tomb raider HAS multiplayer. Someone needs to inform that analyst of that.

u really have to be stupid (if this is true) to think that this game would of have sold 10mil ! 2 to 3 mil would b a more realistic fig

Awh that sucks. Tomb raider is an awesome game and it deserves to make a profit

$100m ?
Not sure if I should believe that.

Uncharted was like $20m....

Anyway it needs to sell 2.9m units at full price to break even.
The 10m is exaggerated, 5m lifetime would be enough. Why didn't you put the real context from the quote in your title ? Probably only to get more hits.

Idiots. They're also spending 120 million on XIII Versus.....

JUST LET SQUARE GO ENIX AND DIE!

Versus13 will make it back over time especially if it stays Sony Exclusive and has all the features Nomura promised. It could be the first Final Fantasy in a complete Gen that is outstanding and good again.Alone that fact with the Sony Exclusivity will secure 10 Million sold units with ease.
FF14 will probably make it back too - FF11 did print money for SquareEnix

Why the f... did Tomb Raider cost that much?
Uncharted didn't cost that much at all and it was developed as an exclusive while the PS3 still wasn't fully conquered even from NaughtyDog
They screwed up somewhere - As far as it goes Tomb Raider should cost less than Uncharted to make.

Ahhhh.... I'm sorry, but this is bullshit. It would mean, that they making 10$/copy, which certainly isn't the case (usually 28$), and I don't think that only the development costed them 100 million, even adding the whole marketing campaign and stuff.

So if the whole game is 100m dollar, and usually the publisher gets 28$ per copy, they will be even, when they reach about 3,5m, which is where they will end up probably anyway.

Spending on a game 100 million dollar is just stupid today, I mean Rockstar spends that much and 343 and Poliphony did that at their last game as far as I know. Most games are 30-40 million to develop, and Tomb Raider seems no different, so I call bullshit!

I'm currently playing the Single Player portion, and it's really quite superb!! If they would have ditched the multiplayer completely, and just stuck with the SP, I think they game would have sold so much more. As it is now, everyone knew the SP would be short since they obviously added MP to extend the gameplay. So as usual, the shitty tacked on MP not only ruined the game but artificially shortened the SP side by devs focusing time on MP and ultimately cost the game much needed sales. I know I'm loving the SP, but I rented it. I knew it wouldn't be very long an adventure, and I have NO INTEREST in MP.

Shame really. Cause this reboot is fantastic. And they'll look at these abysmal sales, and say "Well, I guess that was a miss." Never stopping to look at the fact that the MP was the problem (even though it's painfully/glaringly obvious).

10 millions?????

It will be lucky to do even 3. Those SquareEnix douchebags are hilarious. But they earned it with their idiotic western focus, looking down on fans and not releasing any decent Japanese game.

What anime is this?

Sorry I don't know... just picked this from google. Reminds me of Katsuragi in Evangelion but it can't be that.

Let me guess this is the same guy that said that Bioshock Infinite cost $200m lol.

Edit: the actual quote actually sounds less stupid than the OP makes out

"Square Enix's franchises are well established and require ever-higher production budgets to match and surpass past performance. The latest Hitman and Tomb Raider sold in the three million unit range and got Metacritic ratings above 8. Those numbers would rate as successful for JRPGs that earn more from vendors as exclusives and have manageable budgets. But for games with development budgets approaching $100 million to be truly profitable, ratings have to be above 8.5 and sales need to be in the five to ten million unit range."

He doesn't actually say TR cost $100m at all.
