Forums - Sales Discussion - is ps3 actually selling better than 360?

considering the variables, is ps3 more successful than 360?

Numbers are Numbers, 360 is doing better. 134 19.12%

Considering the variables... 512 73.04%

These Variables shouldn'... 26 3.71%

Other, please specify! 29 4.14%

Total:701

Xbox 360 is clearly more successful. PS3 is selling better.

If you factor out Japan and the year headstart, 360 is still in the lead, for whatever that's worth.

Microsoft offered a 3 years warranty. So most consoles that broke where covered and got either repaired, replaced or even both.

While I believe that many people would rather just buy a new one than pay for the repair, I don't think that many would just ignore the warranty.

On the other hand, many early PS3s broke due to YLOD and that only recently (a few years ago). None of them where covered.

Now you have lots of broken 360 where a high percentage was covered by warranty vs. a lower number of broken PS3s that had no warranty left.
They probably offset each other.

Still sources say was like 50%  for early 360s and 15% for early PS3s. Not only that if your 700$ PS3 broke, I do not think they would rebuy another PS3 unless they were rich. I think most broken PS3 owners bought a 360. While in reverse a 400$ 360 would be a lot easier to buy another 360 then buy a 700$ PS3 instead. All PS3s as far as I know came with the standard 1 year warranty. So your statement in the 3rd line is just false.

YLOD occured much later for the majority of people.

Warranty ran out a long time ago at this point. PS3 was also far from $700 at that time.

The "sold more" part is highly dubious, at best. The PS3 will almost certainly out-sell the 360, if it hasn't already.. It's almost always sold better during the period where both wera available. Baffling that this is a point of contention. And the massive failure rate of 360's for the first 28 or so months does not equalize with the tiny PS3 failure rate because of the MS warrenty. The problem persisted for what? 18-20 months before it was addressed with a warranty? Everybody I know who has a 360, bought multiple units. Everybody. One friend bought NINE of them. I had mine for 10 months before I sold it, and had no RROD, for the record.

What part of "sold" did you miss when you reply with a "will"?
Also, I do not believe your friend bought 9 Xbox without using the warranty... Sorry but you are going too far with this story :)

And if your friend bought 9 Xbox because he is REALLY using 9 Xbox them (like for his kids or family etc), where is the problem? A sale is a sale... Why should we ignore these consoles... It is like ignoring the PS3 bought only as Bluray players... Bluray players or not; Sony sold them...

So yep, "Sold more" :)

Yes, clearly the fact that the PS3 has consistently out-sold the 360 while in direct competition with it, as well as the inevitable outcome of that race (the PS3 selling more units), has no relevance in a discussion about who sold more units. What's more, it MAY have already eclipsed the 360. But it "will"."Will" is what matters. So Yep, "Will sell more". :)

@Imaginedvl. I'm not lying about the 9 360's. But he does have 2 active consoles at a time. Thanks for calling me a liar though. I'll remember it.

*golf clap*

It's just that simple.

PS3 of course

Sony got betrayed by everyone cause of the greed from the developers. At least most got what they deserved for it and struggle to compete in the market.
The early versions of the 360 had more than 80% failure rate and most people replaced their console cause not everyone got a working 360 back or it broke shortly after that.
A lot of consoles got banned yearly to the CoD/Halo Releases so people rebought consoles.
I don't know a single person who doesn't at least own 2 360s - I myself have 3 cause of Region lock and 1 broke down 3-4 times cause Microsoft did send crap back to me and didn't repair it properly.
And i only played on that console for 2 years regularly before i had enough of that.

Take away 20-30 Million sold units and you are at the real number of sold 360s.The sad fact is how people really got fooled by the "Free repair service" and think Microsoft is the good guy...They did send out knowingly their consoles would break and did know they used cheap parts.
The PS4 will show how much more dominant Sony can be cause they do everything right this time..Beginning from the architecture over to the 3rd Party/Game Support, pricing and Online structure.

Important question
Did Microsoft break the dominance of Sony?
I think NO - Sony broke their own necks with the pricing and architecture and no one will deny that.Doesn't matter which console you support.
Without Sony screwing up Microsoft wouldn't had the chance to get that deep into the industry.Developers like it is right now had access to both consoles long before they got released and realised they don't have the money and time to develop for the PS3.And they probably knew already about the high price.
Of course they did choose the 360 aka the console that is easy to learn and develop for and is cheap in price compared to the enemy.Even Japanese Developers had to choose the 360 cause they couldn't afford a PS3 Game like the Tales of Studios said about Tales of Vesperia.

The bigger achievement here cause Microsoft didn't do it alone(95% Sony screwing up and 5% money throwing from Micro) is how good the PS3 and Sony is still doing after all that problems.
They outsell the 360 for 6 years in a row worldwide even without changing their own style that much. They still support every genre and all parts of their community.
I pretty much believe in all the talk and praise about the PS4 - They have both consoles and know what they are talking about. Its the definitive choice for gamers and developers as it looks like. They made their homework.

Good sir, I've never seen any user on VGChartz with those ideas you've just proposed. I'm not sure why no one has thought of this before. Thank you for informing us of this new news. I salute you.

Love it.

And to anyone on here that says there is no comparison of PS3 YLOD to the 360's RROD, consider the following:

  • Do you know of ANYONE that still has a 60GB launch PS3 that HAS NOT had to be repaired at least once? - I don't.
  • 360 RRoD: Covered by 3 year warranty
  • PS3 YLOD: Not covered by any warranty. Repairs at $100+ each failure.
I think if the YLOD was actually brought to the media's attention on the same scale as the 360's RRoD, you'd be suprised at the high failure rate of launch PS3's as well. Like others have said, the fact that MS covered theirs with a warranty while Sony never did makes the differences cancel out when it comes to the old "I bought a new console when my old one broke" arguments.

Uh yeah me!  Also a couple of my friends.  LOL the YLOD was maybe a fith as bad as the RROD, and they did come with a 1 year warranty.  If it didn't break in the first year, you are fine.

Actually one of my friends did get a YLOD, and even though it was out of warranty the SONY rep said he would cover it.

I had a YLOD on my PAL launch PS3 but the slim I replaced it with (yes I bought a new one) still works fine.

I did have an Xbox 360 but after the 4th RROD which was outside the warranty I just sold all my software and cut my losses. Luckily by that point the software landscape was undergoing a shift from 360 to PS3 having the must haves and the noticibly inferior PS3 multi platform titles were also starting to no longer be an issue.

I'd certainly say more units of 360 were sold through upgrades. But they'd more be down to hardware revisions than RROD. (Upgrading to Elite, then to HDMI, then to Xbox S or whatever).

Sony's hardware revisions have more lowered in quality IMO making it less inviting to upgrade.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Xbox made more money because of MS greed to charge for online play while the PS3 doesn't and also the PS3 cost $800 to make. Xbox has sold more software because they have America which buys the most software but come on don't be blind, the PS3 is clearly selling better and is above 360 even with a year head start. A lot of variables come up for why the 360 has made more money, the fact is though the PS3 has sold more and is selling more in a shorter time with a higher price. PS3 wins in sales it's not even a debate, the 360 is still more successful though because of the money it made.
