PS4 Demo vs NVIDIA (PC) Demo

Quantic Dream's Demo (PS4) 128 50.20%

NVIDIA's Demo (GTX Titan) 124 48.63%

Total:252

They both creep me out and fall deeply into the Uncanny Valley. But the Nvidia demo is far more lifelike, just not lifelike enough to be mistaken for life.

Do you really think that the Nvidia tech demo looks more lifelike? Really? To me, the Cage head demo is just so far ahead of the Nvidia demo it makes it look last gen. Resolution has nothing to do with reality. Look at the eyes for goodness sake. They're totally dead in the Nvidia tech.

I like the overall skin shading in the Nvidia demo, but they're cheaping out with the hair. Or rather the lack of it. The guy's eyebrows are textured on vs what Quantic guys are doing. Interesting you bring up that old skin demo. Naughty Dog felt that was the best real time skin shading they've seen so for Uncharted 2 they tried their hardest to recreate it. Interesting to see the trade offs they did to get it as close as they can. You should look into that PDF for Uncharted 2, it goes into great detail about how they went about shading everything in the game. They made sure everything was shaded even if it was done poorly since it's better than nothing.

Ah yes I saw the Nvidia demo a few days ago - really impressive stuff.

However the Nvidia demo seemed to take up most of the power of the Titan if I listened correctly, whereas the Quantic Dreams demo was more of an in-game demo?

Either way in terms of detail Nvidia wins hands down; it was incredible. The imperfections on the skin and the mouth were done incredibly well. All that was lacking was the detail in the eyes and the may have reduced the movement library a little too much as the movement was almost there, but there was a tiny "something" missing. This may be down to the eyes, teeth or not enough subtle facial movements. As others have said the Quantic demo seems to have better "eyes" but the detail of the skin etc with the Nvidia demo is obviously cutting edge real-time graphics on leading hardware which a console, no matter how new, won't be able to keep up with.

Nevertheless both demos demonstrated how muscle movement has been greatly improved and I look forward to the first games where we start feeling emotional connections towards people, rather than seeing them as nothing more than NPC's. At this meoment in time I feel I could relate to Quantic Dream's character more than Nvidia's, even though Nvidia's is clearly more detailed.

PS. Don't forget the rumours surrounding the Fox Engine :D

The old guy is more lifelike... the other seems artificial (I think because the colors and brightness... I don't know).

Maybe is just because the old guy was made by a better team.

I disagree regarding David Cage's demo. That one doesn't creep me out at all. The NVIDIA demo looks a little more real, so I can see it there.

Now, onto the question, which of them do you prefer? I'd like an answer from people who post.

I told you. The Nvidia demo is far more lifelike. So yeah, it's the one I prefer.

As for the creep factor. For me they both are squarely in the Uncanny Valley. The Quantic Dreams one is so unlike a real human face, in both shape and texture, that I really don't see why it impressed so many people. The facial animation is pretty good, but Nvidia's animation and details are so much better that it makes the Qunatic Dreams old man look like a wax doll. The old man is deep in the uncanny valley with no hope to get out, the Nvidia demo is futily climbing up the other side of the valley wall. Niether are close enough to photorealism to be anything but impressive on a technical level. As far as simulating the human face, they do it better than previous real time demos, but no so much better as to make anyone believe they are looking at a fellow human.

I'd say nVidia's has better initial capture tech behind it (LightStage), which is Hollywood level tech - that's actually what's probably most fascinating about it, that they actually managed to squeeze it into commercial card.

Really? Wow, I thought the NVIDIA demo looked more real. But at least you answered the question!

We can't always agree! lol

I think something very weird has taken place over the last few years. PC chip manufacturers have managed to convince people that resolution and polygon counts are what matter because they need people to keep on buying into their tech. People now look at crisp images and automatically think 'more real'. Look closely at the eyes in the Cage demo (that is what the demo was for) and compare them to the frozen and dead eyes of the Nvidia tech demo. Use the quick glance technique and you can easily be fooled by the Cage demo. Try it with Nvidias demo and the eyes give it away every time.

Honestly can't tell the difference at all. Maybe if it were the same exact human and we had something to say it's closer to like the most realistic looking Morgan Freeman or something, but these are incomparable to me

The PS4 isnt meant to compete with the PC because anyone with a brain knows the outcome will always be the PC because they dont have to wait 6 to 7 years for an upgrade. Btw the PC demo does look far better IMO because of the lifeness of the PC demo,i even asked my girlfriend who does not play games other then Sims and she said the PC Demo looks real while the other looks animated.
