Was the PS2 a fad? It was hyped back in the day and now nobody really wants it.
Fuck sake.. Not this again.
Wii sold within the timeframe of 5 years, the typical lifespan of a console. Just because it sold a hell of a lot more than your prefered consoles at the time doesn't make it a "fad." It's called "success." And Nintendo earned much more of it than Sony and MS this gen. If you're going to call the Wii a fad, you must also call the PS360 fads. You can't have your cake and eat it too.
The fact that people still want to call it a "fad" tells me they are still bitter Nintendo gained far more success than Sony and MS this gen and are attempting to undermine it. Time to get over it people.
looking at Playstation track record this platform is nothing but fad hosting machine, most games, entire genres and even entire industry (Japanese) became fad
On the other hand if there is anyone capable to create long term commercially and critically successful IP's it's Nintendo
But to some degree Wii certainly became fad thanks to content produced by 3rd parties, this created bad image for the platform
The motion control aspect of it yes a little bit, if it wasn't then Nintendo would have continued with the same formula.

Do you agree that the typical hardcore games are fads? After all, they fit the definition of "fad". They are only a hot item for a very brief period of time before they start to sell for a fraction of their original price. |
Hardcore gamers are not enough to create a fad in the context the OP is claiming. The fact is that Wii and DS became maybe the most mainstream devices ever coming from the vg industry reaching a wider audience never before seen.

What the hell is a fad?
The defensiveness over the use of the word "fad" is really interesting, as is some of the sophistry being employed to discredit the idea. The PSP a fad? I mean, really?
Is it truly so painful to admit that a certain segment of the Wii's sales fit the imitative model of a fad? I don't know why it the response to that is so angry.
Any highly successful product will have some "me too" sales, where people rush out to impulse-buy rather than because of careful consideration or because that product fit with an established sense of taste and preference. The Wii definitely did, as non-gamers bought it in droves. I just don't get the vehemence of the denial.

We cannot deny the defensiveness, but nobody can't deny also the use of the term in some cases to dismiss the success of the console.
