Every successful console can be said to have had "me too" sales, so why is the Wii so much of an exception that only it can be a fad while no other video game system was? That's the main issue here, that certain folks redefine the term "fad" to fit the Wii, but no other system. And it's done for no other reason than to diminish the success of the Wii.

This is just like the legendary "The Wii is a toy" thread where somehow the Wii was the only console to be a toy while Sony and Microsoft consoles were not. Calling the Wii a toy isn't an issue, because video game systems are toys. But it becomes an issue when the statement is made for the sole reason of elitism and declaring the superiority of competing products.

When you look at what the Wii did in the seventh generation, nobody can claim that it took away third party games from Sony and Microsoft in any noteworthy manner. The success of the Wii didn't hurt owners of Sony and Microsoft consoles from a gaming standpoint. Pretty much the sole reason why anyone would need to downplay the Wii is because they are butthurt by the hardware sales of the console. They are butthurt, because the Wii didn't succeed for the reasons that a console should succeed in their eyes.

You're really coming across as paranoid and reactionary with this.  You can't shout people down from analyzing something just because they're not bending over backwards to praise it.  I'm getting absolutely sick of hearing the inane "butthurt" counter-argument for bleeding everything.  It's ridiculous.  That term needs to die.  I assure you, looking at something critically is not the same as being "butthurt".

I said that the Wii was partially a fad, though I think Gamerace was probably more accurate by saying that Wii Sports and Wii Fit were the real fad products.  It just happens that the Wii was necessary to play them, to the point that many people used the term "Wii" as meaning "Wii Sports".

It's not even like it's a negative.  I don't get the anger at all.

The butt hurt comment is so fucking ridiculous considering I have a Wii and Ps3, last gen had a xbox and the gen before that had a 64 and Ps1, SNES, NES (I still have my 64 and SNES). If anything I'm a bigger nintendo fan than half the ones claiming they are Nintendo fans on this site.

We can all make things up bud. Anyways its true, usually haters try to downplay the Wiis success by calling it a fad. Its usually just people being butthurt.

Word to the wise bud, don't try and argue things which can so easily be proven. You are going to feel salty Thursday, anticipate a new avatar

Lol, you haven't proven a thing in this thread so far. The Wii is as much of a fad as the PS3 a failure.

Nah I've changed my mind. I certainly still think motion controls were a fad, and won't be a prominent selling point next gen (Wii U isn't using it as a selling point, no mention of it with PS4 that I saw)...but selling 100 million units, pretty much just gonna call it a success.

Certainly doesn't look like the Wii U is going to carry on the same level of success.

Are boy bands just a success or a fad? Because Backstreet Boys went on to sell the 9th highest selling album of all time... but I would consider them a fad in a heart beat as you can see from the rest of their album sales (less than half of Mellenium at 40+mil).

Well the Beatles are a boy band if you ask me. So boy bands are hard to classify, the Beatles are still popular, but ones like the Backstreet Boys have disappeared. I dunno, good question.

The Beatles: The OG's of boy bands. Haha. Were the Beatles marketed exclusively towards women? I know they definatly did market towards them but I don't think it was exclusively. I would think that's where the difference is between a pop culture phenom with big following of girls compared to backstreet boys.

Haha way before my time! So I'm not really sure.

I know they aren't the same type of "boy band" as the Backstreet Boys...but I also don't think they can be called a rock band. Lol some grey area in between :)

I think some are pissed that it did not turn out they way they thought it would, so they lash out. The Wii didnt get the 50% market share they thought it would, it didnt get the support they thought it would, from either 3rd parties or even Ninty toward the end. Their are also some who hate Sony/MS and thought this woudl have been the opportunity for them to go away, that didnt happen and it pisses some of them off, if anything those two still managed to do ok and still they continue to get support. YOu made good point and i would just ignore them.

This is pretty much the definition of "butthurt."

I'm sure those who have been following the 7th gen since it started are well aware of the stark contrasts between the die hard Nintendo fan in 2006-2009 when the Wii was breaking all records, as was the DS and it was all Nintendomination this and Nintendomination that, and all the third party developers must develop their leading projects for the Wii or go out of business, etc... and somewhere around 2010 when sales started dropping, the Wii was no longer newsworthy, marketshare was dropping, development took a turn for the worse and suddenly all those enthusiastic, smug Nintendo fans became a lot like the bitter Sega fans following the demise of the Dreamcast.

The Wii had an incredible run, and I have a hard time envisioning another console that will be able to repeat that phenomenon (the one where a mass produced item like a console is constantly short on stock for almost two years), but the numbers don't lie in showing just how quickly the hype and enthusiasm came crashing back down once the general public's fascination with the Wii diminished.

Its funny becuz you guys sound like you are still butthurt. Why exactly would Ninty fans be butthurt? The Wii is still in the lead lol.

I'm sorry, I don't enjoy a console because it is selling the most... or else I wouldn't have enjoyed my N64. I would rather enjoy the games the Wii never got than enjoy the console being in first. To answer your question of what Wii fans have to be sour about? the anwer is a lot really.

Obviously Wii owners had plenty to enjoy, pretty much the reason Wii software sells make PS3s look like crap.

It was not a fad.

Its sales peak and beginning of decline was no different than consoles of previous gens.

Really it comes to the fact that 3rd parties decided to never support the market leader. That had odd ramifications that forced Wii's decline to be faster than the norm for a leader and instead gave a late peak for the HD Twins as they essentially took over the market leadership position.

Now, the more than obvious reason this took place is the FAR larger gap in technology between Wii and PS360 than has existed in market leader to more powerful consoles ever in history.

Did the thursday part fly over your head? Ps3 isn't even up for debate about being a failure. It had equal third party support with 360. It had equal quality exclusives from Sony but had the most exclusives compared to Ninteno and MS. It sold more than all but 3 1st place consoles. You really have no points to presnt here. Only thing that could be classified as a failure would be profits but thats niether your nor my concern.

Wii being a fad is obviously up for debate looking at poll results and how many posts this thread has

One of the best posts as of recently. I'm not entirely convinced the thrid party support is the cause of it's rapid decline though.

No, but motion gaming was.

Its the reason why the Wii, PS Move and Kinect had such a massive drop off in sales. Once everybody got past the wow factor - "wow I can actually use my body to control the game!", nobody gave two shits about it. The casuals got bored and went to mobile games instead and the other gamers went back to playing with a normal controller.

I disagree. Wii saw a drop off because of the abysmal library and the capabilities of the platform were too limited. PS Move sold well at first like a lot of over hyped devices, but nobody anticipated success beyond that.

Kinect has had a great run, its still being pushed and millions of Kinect games were sold in 2012 (even excluding Kinect Adventure).

The are just sales from 2012...

37
Kinect Sports (X360)
Microsoft Game Studios, Sports
113 1,598,026
57
Kinect Star Wars (X360)
Microsoft Game Studios, Action
39 1,211,502
7 Just Dance 4 X360 2012 Misc Ubisoft 0.67 0.12 0.00 0.07 0.86
3 Dance Central 3 X360 2012 Misc Microsoft Game Studios 0.39 0.11 0.00 0.05 0.55

Here's a taste of how some other Kinect games performed in 2012...

Kinect Sports 2 sold over 500K.

Kinectimals sold alsmost 300K.

Dance Central 2 sold 500K.

Dance Central 1 sold 358K.

Just Dance 3 sold over 500K.

Zumba sold 671K.

Your Shape 2012 sold 573K.

Fable sold a measly 140K.

Clearly casuals haven't abandon the Kinect. Its still a good draw for casuals.

Motion devices like Wiimote and Move are pretty much dead. But there is still demand for devices like Kinect and they've begun integrating that technology in televisions. Also with the abysmal performance of the Wii U, maybe the Xbox 720 and Kinect 2 will get much of that motion gaming audience.

Best console this generation, IMO. After Nintendo dropped support in 2010(and, seeing what Nintendo did, third-parties followed), though, it's library became crippled, altough I still think it's a better console today than the PS3 and 360 which were infested of generic shooters.

Lol if Wii remote is dead then so is Kinect. Those software sales are terrible. Just Dance 4 on Wii sold more than Kinect's two highest selling games this year combined. Im positive the Wii sold more software this year than Kinect easily.

Just Dance 4 was bundled with the hardware and Wii still has a massive casual userbase. But the Wii isn't selling for shit and they aren't migrating to the Wii U.
