Forums - Sales Discussion - What will be next-gen about the next-gen?

Ok, so every time a new Gen console comes out, it catches up to home entertainment. CD, DVD, HD Media (ok, so the xbox had an add on, but let's not go there). Screens got better. SD, DVD progressive scan, and now 1080p. Audio was surround sound, then 5.1, now 7.1.

There is a very good chance that when MS and Sony go to release the next generation, that home entertainment will be at the same standard it is today. So, what will they do to make the next-gen experience better enough for you to drop $500 on something new (and not buy the PS3 or 360 for $129)? (aside from the obvious of more memory, faster CPU, and faster GPU)

im thinking maybe not next gen but next next gen.. theyll have Something like Gloves and Boots. soo maybe in the next gen?

Still hoping for stereoscopic 3D gaming.

Fanboy assassinations.

So what do you win if your prefered console sells more than another?

i think for all three it will be something innovative and unexpected - i'm thinking something about motion control ala wii but on a grander scale

Around the Network

easy,

for 360/ps3, it will be a system with integrated motion controls from the beginning...this allows them to even begin to think about competing with the wii

for wii, it will be hd graphics, hdd (actually, 40+gb of flash storage), faster chips and better motion controls

by then it'll be cheaper to make hd consoles and develop hd games, so Nintendo will go ahead and make it an hd console

what they won't do is release a wiiHD in 2 years because it's such a 'must have' item...67% of wii owners have hdtv and yet they still have their wii...50% of japanese have hdtvs yet wii is winning there by a large margin as well...hd is not as important to average consumers as most gamers think (>50% of hdtv owners don't even use hd sources)

Bets:Missed by 420k I bet leo-j vg$500 that wii will sell 31 million by 7/31/08.  Sorry, I don't think he has enough vg$ to make it with all of u that wish you could. Hit, with room to spare I bet kingofwale a 1-week ban that wii Americas ltd sales>360 Americas ltd sales as of the numbers for week ending 7/05/08 (using vgchartz homepage #s)

Predictions:

Wii will sell 18-20mil by 12/31/07  CHECKWii will sell 45mil+ WW by 12/31/08Wii will surpass PS2 sales WW by 11/17/11 (5yr anniversary)Wii Fit will hit 12mil sales in 2009MKWii+SSBB+Wii Fit+SMG > 50 mil sales by 2010 > gta4+mgs+gt5+ff13+haze+lbp

Well batter graphics , and probably next time around consoles will be able to fully replace PCs ....

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

PS4 - Sony's next console will have a built in SDUSS-DVD player which stands for super dooper ultra super-sonic DVD player which plays videos/games at 3000p. It will have 2 terabyte memory, 10.5 surroundsound. 8x faster processers. It will cost $800.

720 - Microsoft's next console will have Blu Ray, which won't be as good as SDUSS-DVD but will be an improvement from DVD. They will find a way to upscale games to 2579i. It will have 2.5tb memory. 4x faster than 360. They will not put a ring on the front to prevent the red ring of death, instead they will have a square and it will be called the "Red Square of Death". They will give out a 30 year warranty. It'll cost $650.

Wii 2 - Nintendo's next console will have a controller thats in liquid form and you inject it into your wrist, this liquid controller that is now in your bloodstream has motion controls and moves the exact way you do. This makes sports games the best on Wii. It will probably still have DVD and if your lucky it will run at 720p. it will only cost $19.99.

@coolestguyever, that is by far the best post i have read in about a week. I say it will be like this gen but better, kinda like last gen to this gen.

Sarcasm aside, it's fairly obvious that going upwards in terms of purely technical specs isn't drawing nearly the crowd that going upwards in terms of control options has drawn. So yes, motion controls will continue to evolve, and if MS and Sony are smart (and decide to stay in the business), they'll be adding motion support from the start. Naturally, both will keep their existing hi-def offerings and build upon them just enough that people won't just pass them on in favor of the 360 and PS3 with third-party motion-sensing controls. Nintendo is not one to sit on its laurels lately, however. They're not going to just leave it at that, unless they suddenly revert to their 1996 mindset of "if we build it they will buy it, regardless of what we offer".

What exactly will happen from here is hard to say for certain, but I can see Nintendo adding the components for head tracking all at once, as well as the most advanced and immersive motion controls to date via a glove-based interface. And I see them getting more into the online scene; that's one thing that is becoming both popular and readily available, moreso than it was in 2001. The Wii is lagging in that department, but by the time its successor is out, they won't have any excuse not to.
