Forums - PC Discussion - First impressions of League of Legends from a Dota 2 player

So, I finally played Lol yesterday, I played like 5 matches. From the few matches I played, I already noticed some things that were "wrong" imo with the game:

1) Can't deny kills: very important aspect of Dota because you prevent someone from getting money, which leads to a big strategy of screwing the enemy player early in the game.

2) You can get money waaay to fast: this makes gathering items way more easy and fast, in my few matches of Lol I already had very good items relatively early in the game , in Dota getting the items you want will require more time and imo more skills (see the next point).

3) Last hitting is very easy: this is maybe because there are more creeps (that's the name of the little guys in Dota, don't know their names in Lol), but getting kills on the little guys is very simplified in Lol, very rarely I missed a last hit which didn't prevent me from getting money, by the second match I just simple auto attacked and got the gold anyway.

4) Escaping: in the matches I noticed that escaping from battles is really easy, unless you had a 4 vs 1 battle, escaping was extremely easy, you could have less than half your HP and still manage to escape successfully. Mind you, can also escape in Dota, but I noticed that unless you are an asshole who lets your whole team die, escaping is difficult and the other team can very easily kill you while you escape (unless you have a teleport scroll which won't warranty an escape).

Granted, there are some heroes in Dota (like Riki for example) that let you escape very easily, but I'm talking about normal heroes that can't disappear.

5) NO COURIER OR STASH!!!!: don't pay too much attention to this point because is a personal opinion, but in Dota you have an animal that can bring you items during a fight, very important because you may want an item but don't want to get all the way back to base (in Lol this is not the biggest issue because the maps are very small). The stash basically let's put items your items on a different place on your inventory until you go back to base or the courier bring it to you, this is particular is extremely useful.

Those are the ones that really stand out the most for me. Granted, some of the "issues" I had with the game might be because the maps are smaller and the matches are on average shorter than Dota.

I did liked the Champions design (some are waaaay better than the heroes in Dota) and I really appreciate that there's more than 1 map (seriously Valve you should add at least one more map in Dota 2).

I'm not saying Lol is a bad game, in fact, I had a lot of fun playing the game. But I feel like Dota 2 requires a lot more strategy and thinking, Lol is more accessible (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). I will keep playing Lol from time to time, but Dota will be my main MOBA.

Excuse me if some of the things I said are incorrect, I doing this thread based on only 5 matches.

As a Dota 2 player, when I went to LoL I found it to be a lot less...stressful, I guess. I always constantly have to pay attention and do my best in every action I take in dota 2, but in LoL i feel like I can just relax and everything is so much simpler. That being said, I really dislike the way player battle interactions work and I also hate the summoner spell. Everyone flashing, smiting, exhausting, etc., it's really annoying.

Honestly though, it's like comparing Halo to Call of Duty. The games look similar and revolve around very similar mechanics and rules, but the characters, physics, stage orientation, etc, are totally different.

Play Heroes of Newerth. Like DotA 2, all the heroes are free. Thank me later.

There's absolutely none of the problems mentioned above. On top of that the skill cap is increased because the pace of the game is faster. This doesn't mean you get gold and items quicker, it just means that the movement speed, attack animations, spell animations, etc, are all more fluid. DotA 2 feels like you're playing underwater. Also at the start of the game each team is given a courier, meaning that you won't have to rely on a support to maybe buy one, and instead you'll definately get wards at the start. DotA 2 may have included all of this in recent patches, but I haven't played the game since Beta. But again, try HoN: you'll most likely love it after you get used to where everything is in the shop.

1/2/3. Yes LOL's design for gold farming isn't as penalizing as DOTA where a player can lose gold from dying or getting denied. This is mainly because LOL's design gives item builds a lot of importance. There are items that give gold every few seconds which are made for some support heroes that don't rely heavily on items but gives them mid to late game support items that changes the way one plays. Unlike Dota where everything relies on kills and creeps which makes supporting have little item dependency. Turning support heroes very squishy and have little late game strength. I personally find having more item choice for other support roles more fun than Dota's support/ganker/warder. And if you get money way too fast that means the same for your enemy given similar skill level. LOL focuses on strategic advantages of a kill than the kill itself. IE: pushing a lane, safe farming, better map control. I'm not sure what you mean by Dota's farming requiring more skill.

4. Escaping depends on hero composition. I doubt it will be easy to escape everytime. However there are certainly lanes that are easier or harder to gank. Maybe you opponents simply didn't have enough cc. This is also where item choice comes in where tanky items can really save you.

5. Couriers are meant for sustaining lanes. In LOL sustaining a lane will rely heavily on your initial items. I find that needing to go back requires more strategy than simply staying in a lane forever. Deciding when requires more strategy. Planning ahead also requires more strategy. Your starting items will be what decides your fate in lane, where as a courier will require more micro skills than strategy.

Game changes a lot with more knowledge. It's a relatively easier game to get into than Dota but the strategies only become very important later into the game where metas are used and team comps are made. Item choices will vary depending on enemy comps. Theres also a lot more build diversity in LOL. CDR, ASPD, AP, AD, ARpen, Mpen, etc.. There's alot of choice to build for. Experimenting with more heroes and item builds is what makes LOL really fun. My friends and I love playing heroes unconventionally like building heavy AD influenced characters with AP. Try watching some tournament replays to get a better glimpse of high level play. I can't really tell which one requires more skill or strategy. LOL probably has less things to worry about than Dota because it doesn't really focus on microing so playing DOTA may take more APM than LOL however strategy wise I think LOL has a lot more compared to DOTA.

So it's totally up to preference. But since im really not fond of microing, I find LOL a lot more fun to play. I actually thought LOL wasn't very different in the first few games I played it but after a while playing with friends I found it a lot more fun than Dota.

What I want from a game.

Dota 2 is really all you need imo

I've played both of these games, stopped playing Dota 2 because I'm colourblind and well you can play it if your colourblind. I enjoy playing Lol mainly its fairly fast and you get to rage at people that are noobs :P

I don't see anything wrong with lol, really the whole so easy to play, coming from Dota people is annoying. I don't understand why a game as to be hard to play for it to be fun. Playing Lol with mates is one of the best feelings you can do if your all skyping together.

One of the few things i do agree which would make Lol better is that if you could deny creeps it was help a lot for trying to shut down a lane. But that being said if your smart enough that when even they come in for a last hit you tag them, its not a problem.

Funny thing is... the colourblind mode looks better the the regular mode even if you can see colours.

Well less stressful as long as you don't pay attention to chat.  LoL has the WORSt player community.

Me, there are some things i like about both, some i dislike.  LoL seems to simplfied, but Dota2 seems almost too complicated.

As for the opwhen it comes to last hitting, i  think it has to do to animation frames.  Going from LoL to Dota 2, it felt like the Dota 2 characters would react to my attack commans MUCH slower.

As an SC2 player who's now playing a lot of LoL, I view all your points as good things. Making the game more accessible, less mechanically stressful, but also not reducing strategic depth much. For example better escapes = more awesome plays in teamfights, no courier/denying = more actions per minute focused on abilities and positioning. It removes the things that make you click buttons for no reason.

The responsiveness in LoL is also better. Dota 2's 'feel' is restricted to whatever limitations the WC3 engine had, which were many.

The job of a game is to make you feel awesome when you do something right. LoL has that down better than any game I know.
