There is plenty of room to cut, the problem is that what needs to be cut is what each side cares about the most. We have ended one war and the other will be over next year, defense spending should be dropping massively, but Republicans don't want to cut it. The Social Security and Medicare age should also be raised, because people are living longer, but Democrats don't want to cut that. The only solution is for them to make deals that hurts both sides, like the recent sequester.

See... NOW we're getting somewhere.  Finally someone who can look at the situation objectively, and not come from a biased viewpoint where you're looking at things from the angle of your political party affiliation or blind love of individual politicians for no apparent reason.

Medicare didn't cause the debt. Deregulation of banks, two wars on credit card and tax breaks to rich did. The Fed Gave the Banks 26 trillion dollars. The rich only pay SS on pay up to 115,000 dollars after they don't pay in, They should. Also SS is not part of the buget. It is solvent until 2030 and if rich pay after 115,000 it won't ever have a problem. The problem is 1/4 of corporations paid no tax's 2012.  Loop holes that only server the rich. The pay at the bottom is a joke and the top has made record profits. So what should be cut the defense that is 3 times it's size since 2001 or take money from the poor that pay into SS their whole life. IT'S THEIR MONEY. THATS WHY REPUBLICANS WANT IT SO BAD BECAUSE THERE IS TRILLION IN THE SS TRUST FUND. Republicans haven't balanced a buget in 50 years. Dems have. Republican had a hand in all of the financial disasters. So tell me why should we cut the poor and people's money that we owe them.

Better yet... don't ask for a refund.  Better if you dump your tuition funds back into the economy.  At least then some good is coming of it.

Purchasing for purchasing's sake and then counting that as growth is a large part of the problem.

So uh

The Republicans are narrow-minded to bring a country to a paralysing crisis setting that lowers confidence in government, and:
The Democrats are too weak to propose anything bold at all

The word 'bold' in the context you're using it in scares me to death.  Generally speaking, doing something 'bold' in politics means spending even more money and raising revenues.  We know how that gets done... scraping even more money off the top and sapping capital from the only segment of the country that actually generates true growth: small, private businesses.

In the 1930's our debt was way worse and we went on a spending program that got us out of debt. Because one thing that low information voters don't understand is a GOvernment Create markets. Without them you can't have one. It is not like a house hold or a business but if you have went to college like I have you would have already known that.

Dear low information voter,

Read this.

Dear Badgenome.

Your SO funny.

I don't need to you read your two word sound bites. I study Economics and am taking a class in that and political science. If anything My class has taught me that this site is full of extremely low information and your articles from the Koch brothers are great but not for me.

You should be taking an english class.

Yep I did and I have to take a early class to fix it, however if thats all you got......... Wow you go that low. LOL

When I was learning english my house was a warzone. I wasn't pampered so I had to do it all my self and I run my own business while I'm going to college so I can 't help get people that you love out of power. So I don't think My english has stopped my success has it??? No it hasn't, have a good one.

Well, if you really want to go back to the root cause of the debt, it's more or less around the early 20th century.  First it was the Income Tax, then it was the Federal Reserve, then it was the FDR legislation spending ridiculous amounts to artificially create an atmosphere where it appeared we recovered from the Depression.

Of course, the real reason we got out of the Depression is because WWII ended and people came back from the War and started their own business and began generating true capital.  Taxes went down... revenues went up...population exploded... we had a solid three decades of incredible growth.  Then we messed it up by electing Politcians who promised to take care of us instead of letting us take care of ourselves.  Too much money being spent on things we can't afford.  In other words: entitlements.  Iraq War didn't help... but it was merely a blip in the long journey that has taken us from a free market economy to the monstrosity that it is today.

Thread title is extremely ignorant of the actual situation. lol. Not to mention whoever wrote this article is clearly a member of the Democratic Party or at the very least an extremely biased person who writes care-free with a deliberate leftist slant.

This is from a website called ThinkProgress. That title screams left wing nuts.

Yep us on the left like to think and usually are more educated than people on the right. The right is good at 2 word sound bites and thats about it. LOL  FUnny you recognize. LOL

I'd like to think that someday you'll come back to this website and look at what you've written.  I'd like to think that someday you'll come back here and see that your viewpoints are entirely bunk, that you come off as an uneducated yet somehow pompous asshole, that nothing you have said that wasn't copied from your run-of-the-mill liberal blog in any way corresponds to even the tiniest smidgeon of a bit of a piece of any idea that has even its roots in the way that things are, and that even the ideas that you copied are propanda levied by the least educated of the liberals in our crumbling society.  I'd like to think you'd realize that every last thing you've said here has been beneath even the most ridiculous, ill-regarded, utterly undignified, worthless, thoughtless, inane, putrid, vile, utter tripe produced by the most mentally disturbed people ever to have been spewn forth onto this sad, sad Earth.

And yet I know that realizing your own stupidity is above any level of understanding to which someone like you can ever hope to achieve and that somehow you'll come up with a smug comment in response to this, which will surely be disregarded by any thinking person, and yet, will make you feel even more pompous than you already do now.

ahhh the job creators myth..

so crushing the middle and lower class expands the customer base for said small, private businesses?   gotcha lol

spaceguy definatly started a shitstorm with obvious troll bait that I'm sure he knew exactly what he was doing with his responses in this thread and thread itself... should be locked and bans should be handed out

We should evaluate how people became poor, not just lump them all together. A lot of people rather live on free handouts as opposed to acquire skills and work.

I don't see how the the left is helping the sick. Frankly less people would be sick if they just took better care of themselves. Its poor people that primarily drink, smoke, become obese, do drugs, etc. They're a big drain and many contribute nothing.

There are many Christians on the left as well... for the record. That's why Obama was anti gay marriage in the first 4 years.

it's funny most of you don't understand anything in politics accept hate, blaming and very low informed. GO BACK TO FOX NEWS AND FIND YOUR 2 WORD SOUND BITES.

Never in the history of the world have people voted for a slogan to lead them.
