Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Disturbing thought/rumor: Retro working on Mario Kart U?

I could see Retro perhaps doing some work on MKU, but making the whole game? Unlikely.

They no doubt have 2 or 3 projects on the way, could this be one of them? Perhaps.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Well, considering that, after Wii Sports, Mario Kart Wii is best selling Wii game, I'd say there's lot of reason for doing that - WiiU does not have Sports equivalent, so it really needs Mario Kart U real soon.

But they have a dozen studios that could easiy turn out an MK game; Retro's speciality is A-grade, visually stunning core titles.

Well, I am hoping it will be A grade, visually stunning title ;)

And I'd say it is core, core for their buisiness - they really need that one to get the hardware going, so I think it makes sense to throw lot of their talent on it.

But Retro's kind of talent isn't necessary for it to be successful. What they're good at is the more "hardcore" games that appeal to an audience the Wii U desperately needs to court. Nintendo has many studios that could do Mario Kart, but only one that could do a game like Metroid Prime.

Well, I do agree on that - if they still actually want to atract that portion of market, they need some exclusive "hardcore" titles - whether it's some action-rpg or action-adventure (I discussed M rated Sheikah spin-off based on Zelda universe several times in various threads here) or some FPS different from current crop of shooters out there, I think they do need to come up with some new IP - I'm honestly doubting that any of the old once will be enough...

I agree, and Retro would be the perfect pick to helm a new IP like a Nintendo Uncharted or Resistance.

Sadly, I don't have faith that Nintendo's management are smart enough to realize this anymore.

Right. As Uncharted amptly demonstrates, one can develop a hugley successful T-rated game aimed at teens adults (and likely while retaining their pristine image). Nintendo is halfway there, but most of their recent efforts aimed at that crowd are niche titles, particularly RPGs.

Yeah, if I was in charge of Nintendo I'd put Retro to work on an Uncharted-meets-Skyrim-without-the-glitches epic, and make a Twilight-Princess-esque dark Zelda. That would suck in many players who would never give Mario Kart a second glance.

Interesting, my fears are the exact opposite: That Retro is going to ruin Mario Kart.

I agree. If they are helping in Mario Kart is probably on its online side of the game as they did with the 3DS game.

But let's not forget that Nintendo main objective now is increase the sales of the console, and as previous entries of the franchise have shown, Mario Kart is a bigger system seller than Metroid or StarFox (which are the rumored titles which Retro have been working on), so it's normal for them to try to launch it as soon as possible.

Also, if their work is the same as with Mario Kart 7, it won't affect their work on other projects.

Please excuse my bad English.

Metroid Prime 4 or burst.

Well, think about it. If Retro were to make Mario Kart U, it would probably be the best one yet. If Nintendo really put them to the task, Retro is probably going to make the deepest and intuitive game with the most content in the series. It's not that stupid because Mario Kart Wii sold 30 million units. The brand has that much power, so to put one of it's best studio's to the task to create the best Mario Kart, may be an attempt by Nintendo to replicate the 30 million sales of the Wii version.

I think Retro is overrated as hell, Nintendo needs to get Rare back from MS which is very unlikely... :( I would like to see a StarFox game by Retro tho... Please, 4 Prime (including Hunters) games are enough.

But Rare is a shell of its former self, at least creatively. I think Nintendo (or anyone else for that matter) should buy Rare's IPs, and actually use them. What's the point of Banjo, Conker, Jet Force, and Killer Instinct gathering dust?

I agree about Prime. A wonderful series, but it's run its course.

@OP: Maybe a small team from Retro is helping on Mario Kart Wii U, but I'd be shocked if this is the sexy title everyone is expecting from Retro. Much more likely it's Metroid, Star Fox, or a brand new IP.

I agree that the Prime series has run its course and we need something new instead, but I have no interest in Rare anymore, they haven't released a good game since 2001.
