Forums - Nintendo Discussion - A sign the DS is going the way of the PS2 and GC this year?

I was at Gamestop today and noticed a few boxes on the counter. They were selling PS2, DS, GC, and GBA games for super low prices in Dvd sleeves. Gamestop is discontinuing used DS games? Is that a sign that this will be the last year the DS is on the market?

Woah, your gamestop has old GCN games?

Mine got rid of all theirs or something.

Well, the NPD thread says DS did 100k and pretty much flat last month. So I kinda doubt it's being discontinued.

I REALLY need to find an old game store where they still have some GC games in the warehouse or something.

I'd say yes. Early 2014 at the latest. Remember, the decision to discontinue the system isn't 100% up to Nintendo. Retailers can decide whether they wish to carry the system or not. And given that after the holidays there are going to be 6 home consoles and 4 handhelds to stock on shelves, most stores are going to stop selling current gen systems to make room for the next gen ones. Some of the first to go are going to be the PSP and the DS, as their successors have been out the longest. Next year, I imagine the Wii will be the next one to go. The 360 and the PS3 should have 2-3 years left on US shelves.

Does the DS sell good in emerging markets? IE is this the death in America, or the death in the world?

I can only speak for Brazil.  DS never sold much around here , PSP is the clear winner in sales.

According to Nintendo's shipment data for the previous quarter, the DS shipped less than 10K in Japan (it actually has only shipped 10K in the last 9 months), 1.14M in the Americas, and only 30K in EU + the rest of the world.  So, if the DS dies in the US, then expect it to die in the rest of the world shortly thereafter.

The 3DS completely killed the DS in Europe and Japan. The America's just need to catch up with the times.

Would be smart of Nintendo to do. DS is holding back the 3DS. Besides, 3DS is cheap enough that you can still play DS games on it. Besides with next-gen consoles coming, these stores need to make shelf space.

I would like it to stay around for selfish reasons. I know it is hurting 3DS in West, but I want it to eventually actually best the PS2.

They should stop producing it in summer of 2014. Announce it at E3 and give it a proper send off. One last shipment as a bundle with collector skin.

It's going to take it longer than 2014 to beat the PS2.  First of all, we still don't have any real confirmation on if the PS2 has truly stopped shipping to places outside of Japan.  This we will find out for sure when Sony releases its financials reports.  And second, the DS only shipped 2.61M units in 2012.  This was down ~60% from last year (6.47M for 2010), and 2011 was actually down ~67% from 2010 (19.46M for 2010).  Even if the DS only falls another 50% this year, it will end up shipping only 1.31M units, which only puts the total at 154.98M.  That still doesn't match the 155.1M for the PS2 from March 2012.  So, even if the DS stayed on the market for the entire year of 2014, while only dropping another 50%, then that would put total sales to 155.76M.  This beats the March 2012 number for the PS2, but definitely doesn't beat the ~157M-158M the PS2 is most likely at, now.

In other words, even if they were able to keep the DS on shelves until 2016 (with optimistic 50% drops each year), and the PS2 did actually stop shipping WW, then the DS would most likely either come up just short of the PS2 or tie with it.  Of course, realistically they will discontinue it in 2014 at the latest.
