Forums - Nintendo Discussion - In what gen has Nintendo been more innovative?

If we are talking innovation, then probably the 3rd.

Certainly not in recent times.

You mean post-Wii/DS era?

Past 3 gens.

Dude, the 8th Gen:

There's all the New Legendary 1st Party IPs that are already getting sequels, like Dillon 2 & Crashmo, and who knows what else will get a sequel.

The Wii U brings us "Single-Player-Asymetrical-Gaming" which hasn't been copy by the PS4 & 720, which helps the Wii U secure a few more exclusives, as well as more exclusive definitive versions of older games.

Plus theres finally full on connectivity between the 3DS & Wii U.

Plus TVii & downloading full 3D movies.

And many more.

As a bonus, the Wii U gets such games as Lego City & Bayonetta 2, while the PS4 & 720 are just stuck with the same multiplayer games as the Wii U & PC get, for almost all 3rd party support.

I guess I should name some legendary 1st party IPs & 3rd party exclusives the 8th Gen has gave us, starting with 1st Party:

Dillion's Rolling Western Franchise

Rebooted Kid Icarus Franchise

Pushmo franchise

Sakura Samurai franchise

Ketzal's Corridors franchise

Yarn Yoshi franchise

Nintendo land franchise

Rebooted Luigi's Mansion franchise

Spirit Camera franchise

Steel diver franchise

Rebooted Pilotwings franchise

Fire Emblem Cross franchise

For 3rd party exclusives:

Rhythm thief and the Emperor's treasure franchise (the sequel is exclusive to Wii U)

The wonderful 101 franchise

Lego city franchise

TheatRhythm Final Fantasy franchise

Mutant Mudds franchise (sequel exclusive to 3DS)

Mighty Switch force

Rebooted Bayonetta franchise

Rodea the Sky Soldier

Bravely Default Franchise

X franchise

code of princess franchise

Project X Zone franchise

Beyond the labyrinth franchise

And anything else I forgot about 8th Gen Nintendo IPs, both 1st Party & 3rd Party.

The Nintendo 3DS has StreetPass & 3D controls (motion sensors in handheld) & virtual Surround sound Speakerphones (for people who don't have surround sound headphones like "Plantronics Gamecom 777") & Play Coins & Mii's created by taking a photo of yourself & 3D Augmented Reality & true Panarama view in video game system & Real Apps & DLC in Handheld console & download full 8 GB games in handheld device & download Full 3D movies to watch on the go & glasses-free 3D.

The Wii U has "Single-Player-Asymetrical-Gaming" & true panorama view in Home Console & NFC (as shown in E3 2011 & use for "Reverse Augented Reality" as well as for other things of course) & true home console video chat during gaming & Geomagnitic Sensor & MiiVerse (also in 3DS) & TVii.

And as a bonus the 8th Gen gave us eShop & Nintendo Network.

Here's some examples of the Wii U doing "Single-Player-Asymetrical-Gaming":

3rd, then 7th, then 5th for reasons listed.

For the most part they are innovative a gen and then build off that in the next, meaning next gen we should see hopefully see something pretty revolutionary again.

@Kaizar I didn't miss it the other 5 times you posted that, I know. While I agree that the 8th gen has certainly been more innovative than some gens (SNES GCN), it just doesn't hold a candle to the some of the previous gens in terms of the effects that it has and will have had on the gaming market.

OK, so I have to wait a few years for people like to see what else the Wii U & 3DS can do besides these examples.

But 3D does make graphics look much more crisper looking then HD ever did.

So the "3DS" & "3D movies in theaters" have proven that HD is just a gimmick.

We can at least all note that the 3D makes Video Game "Graphics" look much more crisper looking then HD does.

N64 Simply because they were pioneering what could be done in 3D.
-Super Mario 64 was essentially the first 3D platformer. (at least on consoles) Also had great camera control for its time.
-OoT dungeon design was way ahead of its time and influenced just about every 3D game that came out after it. Also it introduced the (Z) lock on mechanic.
-As awkward as the controller was it really was influential, plus it had the rumble pak.

It seems like a lot of people overlook or ignore the importance of the transition from 2D to 3D.  Its the biggest transition in the history of games imo  (The addition of more pixils is not as impressive) and Nintendo was right there at the center of it.

The only gen they haven't really innovated anything also turned out to be their most disappointing console; GC.

"Mario had a squirt gun! A squirt gun!!!! That has to count for something!!!!! What? It doesn't? Oh....."

In all seriousness, I am glad you pointed that out. I'll also add that the controller was particularly counter-innovative as well, especially in the way it eliminated the diamond face-button configuration and instead replaced it with three odd buttons surrounding one big green button. It seems like something Atari would do. Not to mention the poorly designed mini-dPad and squishy/springy unresponsive shoulder triggers.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
