Forums - Sony Discussion - ‘PS4 will out-power most PCs for years to come’ – Avalanche Studios CTO

it won't be as powerful as really powerful gaming rigs but more powerful as most average pcs and even many pcs of people who also play with it from time to time.

i think one big advantage of pc against ps3/360 was that those games run almost only in 720p or below and that is really not that great if you sit so clos to a screene to really see that. with next gen, many games will probably run in 1080p on ps4 and since most pc gamers will also only play in 1080p for the next years this big advantage is gone. one more very important thing for me is anti-aliasing and this will be  much better next gen.

you will still have the possibility to play games in a even higher resolution and more frames on pc but that is really only something very few pc gamers will do.

Hell yeah... it is you have a badass machine.

CPU-wise, tough, it's only going to outpower Atom machines.

The ones that buy the newest and best GPUs are in the minority.

Indeed. This is why we may never truly see a game take advantage of a GTX 680 and such, barely anyone would be able to run it. Notice how games like Crysis and Metro are rare (and even they don't take advantage of the best GPUs of their time - they were just poorly optimized).

The good thing is that next-gen consoles will also advance PC gaming.

uhh.... RAM doesn't equal power.

Current Game Machines: 3DS, Wii U, PC.

Currently Playing: X-Com(PC), Smash Bros(WiiU), Banner Saga(PC), Guild Wars 2(PC), Project X Zone(3DS), Luigis Mansion 2(3DS), DayZ(PC)

that statment makes no sense. I'm no technical expert, but I'm sure there are already more powerful PC's out there. If there is'nt then, there will probably be very soon. Some expert could easily build one, just as powerful. Again,I have no knowledge of Pc's at all,but logically, that statement just doesn't make any sense.

The PS4 isn't going to out "power" even current gaming pcs. But because it's a closed system and devs can optimize games for it's hardware the games will look awesome. PC games have to be made to run on low end systems, high end systems and everything in-between. It's rare for a game to look the best if it was also designed to run on a PC from 5-8 years ago. It has been done, Crysis still looks great, but it's rare.

What's interesting about the next gen and how PCs will be effected is that most gaming engines have become multiplatform and highly scalable. 3rd party devs are going to be making less and less exclusive games. That means we are going to see even more games that look identical on PS4 and Nextbox as well as PC. 1st party PS4 and Nextbox games will take advantage of their system's strengths, but PC devs will be forced to continue to support older hardware out of fear of cutting out customers with less powerfully machines. Time will tell if scalability will let high end PCs beat consoles next gen or if old PC hardware will continue to hold back graphics to the lowest common denominator.

great to hear, nice to know. can't wait to see what becomes of the 8th gen. and its games, and if what's being said comes true.

He didn't say it did. But the 8GB of RAM is what developers are most impressed with so its what you'll hear them praising the most.

Before we get to anything else, you have to define this.

We can use Steam?

The most popular config in Steam is...

- Intel CPU 2.3 Ghz to 2.69 Ghz (21.10%)
- 8GB System RAM (22.62%)
- Intel HD Graphics 3000 (4.13%) - The runner up is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti (2.92%), well all HIGH-ENG GPU together is less than 2% total.
- 1GB VRAM (34.54%)

Yeap... I can say the PS4 is better than 99% of configs found in the Steam.
