Forums - Sales Discussion - So it's widely known as a fact that many Nintendo games have ridiculous legs. But here's the question that no one really bother to ask...why is this so?

It's because Nintendo does certain games that really nobody else does, and they do them really well. Take NSMB for example, it's (i.m.o.) hands down the best 2d platforming available, and nobody else really focus's on that particular genre full force the way Nintendo does, so it's the best game of it's genre until they release a new one. Same with Kart, same with Smash.

Compare that to say the FPS's genre, they are for the most part all pretty similar, and there is a new one on the shelf every time you turn around. By default, the newest one just takes over where the last one left off.

It basically boils down to quality over quantity.

If you own a Wii, you own Smash.

I don't, I hate the Super Smash Bros series with a fiery passion, but I own a Wii, and every Nintendo home console prior to it.

simple answer: kids

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

Because during the Wii generation Nintendo basically figured that as long as the casuals keep buying the same games over and over again (Wii Play, Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii, Mario Party 8, etc etc), they don't need to release anything else and can sit back and watch the money roll in.

Seriously, this has been their strategy since 2008... release one or two games a year that do well with the casual crowd, and ride out their sales for as long as they can.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Infrequency of sequels, pretty much. And lack of competition on the platform.

On the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, publishers have very little time to recoup their money because there are so many big names. It's why small-fry devs avoid the Chrismas season if they have any sense; they get crushed by the newest iteration of franchise X, Y, and Z. Or take these last few months. Some fairly big-name games have come out, and most of them have already faded out of the public consciousness due to new releases.

Nintendo doesn't have any serious competition, in this regard. The home-field advantage makes them a bigger player on their own platform than any competitor could possible hope to match. Other consoles, because they have a smaller individual presence, are on a more even playing field, and so compete much more.

And for the same reason, publishers on 360 and PS3 release more sequels. They have to, if they want to stay relevant in the market. Which means the last game they released is usually made outdated pretty quickly.

Nintendo, because it doesn't have to compete against any other big names, can take its time, confident in the knowledge that nothing its competition can put out will be able to compete with its own franchises.

The fact that they make timeless games and not games that will be outdated in two years. That has a lot to do with it.

It because they focus on gameplay, and the experience that people get from the game, in contrast to the competition which just try use graphics to please their fans who just like to jerk off to the visuals.

Better games obviously.

The numbers don't lie.

does that make Angry Birds the best game ever?

Its because when new systems are sold, they pick up the greatly known Nintendo franshises, and inbetween great 3rd party software they pick up greatly known Nintendo franchises.

Current Game Machines: 3DS, Wii U, PC.

Currently Playing: X-Com(PC), Smash Bros(WiiU), Banner Saga(PC), Guild Wars 2(PC), Project X Zone(3DS), Luigis Mansion 2(3DS), DayZ(PC)

Don't know, and don't care! They make good games that I want to play. Who cares about what every other gamer does. I'm buying the games for me..not them.
