Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Castlevania Mirror of Fate (3DS) Review Thread: IGN hates it, Gaf loves it

Huh. Interesting response. I would've pegged this game for a more consistent 6.5-7.5 range. Very divisive -- guess your mileage may vary.

I haven't had the chance to play a Castlevania game yet, and this one won't be my first.

The scores are literally all over the place. I liked the demo, but I didn't like it enough to drop full price. Will get in summer.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

I love new Castlevania (the abomination) but this looks too much like old Castlevania, too much 2D, indoors and dungeons.

The graphics are poor, but the music is amazing just like in Lords of Shadow on PS360.

I hate my 3DS because the screen is so damn small. Was this game rumored to be ported to PS360?

A couple more reviews in spanish:

Meristation: 8.3 http://www.meristation.com/es/nintendo-3ds/castlevania-lords-of-shadow---mirror-of-fate/analisis-juego/1781854

3Djuegos: 9.0 http://www.3djuegos.com/juegos/analisis/13904/0/castlevania-lords-of-shadow-mirror-of-fate/

From the reviews it looks like a good game with some flaws. People expecting a Castlevania like the older ones will be disappointed as it's more like a 2D Lords of Shadow.

Some of those scores don't make any sense, and smell bias all over the place.

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

Out of 16, 4 reviews gave them less than 7.
Overall it seems that the game is getting good reviews. So far the average is 7,8.

the wide range of points, from 2,5 to 9 clearly shows that: 1 - some of the reviewers are highly biased, either because they just hate Nintendo platforms / Castlevania games or they love them. 2 -some reviewers didn´t understand the purpose of the game, or based their reviews on what they wanted to see rather than what the game shows by itself.

IGN´s review was made by Colin Moriarty, which is a notable Nintendo-hater........ now, Edge gave the game a 7, which I think is a respectable score, considering how demanding their editors are (and relutant about giving high scores).

We shouldn´t take reviews so seriously. Unfortunately, many, many editors are not professional and do their reviews more based on their bias than anything. Anyone interested in the game should try the demo first.

Gosh....Reviews are all over the place, and I must say I don't usually look up 3ds games but are the graphics generally this bad for 3ds titles?

Well... I haven´t played the demo yet, so I don´t know what to say about the graphics. What I can tell you is that 3ds graphics only look good on the 3ds screen itself. Internet videos don´t do justice to them. Don´t ever base your choices only in graphics.

Some people on GAF got the game early and shared their impressions.

"I won't have my review ready today, but for what I've played, I'd recommend it. It's a very good game AND a very good 3DS game. Rather unique addition to the lineup."

"Got my review copy, embargo lifted, quick GAF review:
Don't expect this to play like a classic 2d/DS/SoTN Castlevania.
Nice engine, graphics are pretty cool, 3d is nice.
FALL DAMAGE, even for Alucard.
Can't cancel out of some attacks, leaving you wide open. You don't feel as in control of your character like you do on previous games in the series.
If you want to dodge an attack by jumping over attacks or obstacles, you almost have to plan early to do so.
Game is trying to be serious, but throws in some cringe-worthy comedy that pulls you out of the heaviness of the story. Conbine that with the cell-shaded comic book cutscenes, and you get all these variables of mixed styles that doesn't fit well together.
Music is great, but it blows out your speakers. A lot of audio clipping.
Alucard uses whips.
FALL DAMAGE.

The game tries at parts to be something it's not. And although it shares elements of the more popular Castlevania titles as well as Lords of Shadow, it ends up feeling like a cheap knock off of both.

But even through all of that, it's quite fun once you get over these issues and it is a really good looking game, but in the end it leaves you wanting a traditional Konami-made Castlevania in this 3D/2D style.

If you want and expect a traditional 2D Castlevania, don't buy it.
If you liked LoS and the lore behind it and don't mind the things listed above, buy it."

"Basically this. It's a well made, fun action game, and it's like nothing else on the system. I would recommend it."

"Wow, 4.7? I thought the game was pretty good."

I tought the same until I played the demo, for some reason the screenshots looks absolutely horrible, but in the console the game looks so much better.
