Forums - General Discussion - How important is backward compatibility in truth?

Thing is that Sony, MS, or Nintendo don't have any obligations to put BC into their consoles. People have been spoiled because almost every console has had some sort of BC. They don't have to put BC in if they don't want too.

It's important for the first 2 years of the new console's life when it has no games and the older console is still getting support. After that period, no one cares anymore cos they have new games to play.

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

Not very important at all, i still from time to time set up my gamecube/ps2 if i have the urge to play silent hill/REmake but its not that often, once or twice a year

People were not spoiled. Companies were in compition trying to get peoples money.  They dont have to put in BC if they dont want to, but consumers also dont have to buy the console.

Depends.

First year a new system is out it is important especially when said system is lacking variety/great titles. When I bought my 360 I was still playing original XBox games the first two years the system was out, but over time I never played any again except Halo 2.

The difference this time around is I spent money on DLC and XBLA titles. The original XBox had very little good DLC (mainly just PGR2 and the KOTOR DLC) so it wasn't a big deal. This time around theres a lot of DLC and XBLA titles to be had.

It's not a huge deal as long as MS keeps the servers up for DLC. But XBLA titles should be a no-brainer.

The other issue is long term reliability. Will the license transfer tool always be available? What if my 360 breaks? I've already bought 3 360's (launch, falcon chip and then later the slim. the launch one finally broke after 6 years and then I upgraded to a slim). I guess as long as I can re-download my content and 360's are readily available to buy It's not a huge deal. I don't mind keeping two systems plugged in.

It's just that simple.

To me: Not at all. Also, if one day I want to play a retro game, I will use my retro consoles or Gaikai, but I have been gaming for 20 years, I have played everything I wanted at launch.

Depends. If  you've owned the previous consoles from the particular company than I don't see the issue, but if you're like me and you've never owned a Sony console, BC becomes a HUGE factor for PS4, as you have litterally 1000s of games at your disposal from launch. But it looks like Sony doesn't want my business as it sounds like it's not including BC for PS4, so I'll most likely pass on Sony yet again.

With gaikai you'll be able to buy all PS3, Ps2 and PS games. The problem is that it won't play physical copies, which is a problem for people who own the console and already have a collection. For someone like you, it's ideal, you can buy the games on the PSN.

you will also need internet access to play them as they are streamed, and not downloaded.  so may not be good for all users.

That's true. I think almost everyone has internet access. But ps3 games will ned a decent speed, and that will affect player in developing nations.

I own like 20+ PS3 games, and I'm bored with them now.....sure it would be nice to play the upcoming GTA V on PS4 but I'm going to keep my PS3 regardless. Maybe I'll hand it down to to a cousin one day like I did with my previous consoles.

Also here in the US. My internet speeds are horrible.

Truth is always backwards compatible, otherwise it is a lie or some kinda violation of causality.
