In the region of Japan where MGR has been most successful I'm not sure how popular the game actually is:

Its not just about sales. I'm not saying one game is better than the other. I still want to pick up MGR at some point. But on Amazon Japan this game is on par with FF13...

Already a million seller at 60$ price and yes I know Konami doesn't take the full 60$.

Next half a million probably at 28-30$ average price.

Kojima already talking about a sequel, DmC killed the franchise.

The DmC and Rising sold the same in US in the first month (NPD numbers).

Seems like Japan saved Rising because it bombed in sales like DmC.
