Forums - Sony Discussion - BET on the PS3 Price Drop!

Isn't the RRP already being undercut by retailers? They just need to make the price cut official and leave it to rake in money, then focus on PS4.

In the next PSN+ offer they'll give a free Ps3.

They really do not need to cut at the present time, I would wait to Gamescom.

I would hold out till after the big games for 2013 are launched. From a software perspective we will see gta, cod, bf, gt6, GOW,lou, and gears of war this year. So I would let the software do the dirty work then cut the price when that drop comes.
Sony and ms are neck and neck currently I doubth either are crazy about market share this late in the gen, if so prices would have been slashed long ago.

Cutting any time soon would be utterly pointless. Unit sales wouldn't rise all that much, and the loss in profit would be devastating to Sony's bottom line. Imagine cutting $50 off...say 3 million sales between now and August/September. That would be a fall of $150 million in revenue and profit (or, possibly, a complete loss of profitability on the hardware and see losses again).

If Sony are going to cut the price, it'd be far more effective to do it much later in the year (maybe September, so 2 months before expected PS4 launch), or even wait until the Next-Xbox launch and try to disrupt that.

June. PS4 full details will be given, then Vita, then PS3 will get its time and have Beyond, LoU, GT6 maybe, and Puppeteer mentioned (like just list them to say you still support the platform). They will then announce the price drop to $200 for the 250gb version, a 12gb version coming to the states for $150-$180, and $250 for the 500gb. Vita will get a slash on either memory cards or the system during its section of the conference as well I think.

Dont drop the price, create good value bundles with popular games.

GT5/ Uncharted Twinpack in Europe
God of War 3/ Uncharted Twinpack in America
???? in Japan

The PS3 will be profiting a whole lot now. The super slim will be great for Sony at the current price.

If Sony were to cut the price, it should be done in developing markets. Eastern Europe, Asia, South America. Places where the PS4 wont be out/affordable for a long tine.

There will be no price drop. Sony has only raised the price and they have years of bleeding money to make up. IF the PS4 makes it out this year in any reasonable quantities, it will be be at a considerable markup. They will control demand with higher prices (more profits) and this higher price will attempt to make the PS3 look like a good deal.

PS4 - $449-$559 and available in very limited quantities.
PS3 - $270+ and available everywhere including some good black Friday deals.

Why is it that there are a hundred threads pondering whether the sale of used games will kill the industry and then people tu

While this does make sense, look at how many big games are out this year. 3 games sold per new console, shit even one controller sold, will make up a price drop of 30$, say 219$.

The question is, are the current sales plus game sales profit greater than increased console sales plus increased game sales? Consider that there are 6 big multiplat titles this year, and a similarly priced console could help secure those new customers and corresponding licensing fees.

Plus, it's media attention, which is hugely important at the moment.
