Forums - Gaming Discussion - A New Dawn - A CGi-Quality analysis

Good day! I would just like to briefly share my experience with A New Dawn and where I'd like to see graphics take off in the future.

What was achieved here was nothing short of amazing. As I played around with the tech demo myself, it quickly became clear just how far behind even my best looking games are. The skin, hair, lighting, and attention to detail are nearly flawless. Even on max, titles like Crysis 3 and Battlefield 3 have a ways to go before reaching these heights.

There's another piece that I'd like to tackle. As a huge fan of the "The Uncanny Valley" and its research, I couldn't believe how lifelike this caharacter was. However, despite how real-looking this humanoid/elf creature appeared, the "Valley" was still ever present. Now very few video games have ever even attemtped to cross it, and some (like 3EYOND: Two Souls) almost do, but without this level of detail.

So where do we go from here? Well, I don't expect any next gen consoles or PC games to look constantly like this anytime soon, but I am excited for a community discussion regarding graphics. Where do you think they need to tighten up? What are you impressions of A New Dawn?  Let's chat!

Below, I'll post the actual video of the demo running with interaction on my newest rig.

I don't know if I'm the only one here, but I'm actually not experiencing the uncanny valley anymore. I remember being weirded out when I saw Heavy Rain and even one of those Japanese androids in person. Maybe it's that my expectation of graphics have gone so up that I can accept the image you just posted as "really good graphics" rather than "uncannily realistic".

what's displayed is nicely detailed, but the background most of the time is just blur due to DOF and she has perfect skin, which means, there are hardly any great details there to speak of - the hair still has some ways to go to call it "lifelike", but it's definitely a step up from pretty much all other videogame hair I've seen and her wings are just beautiful

what totally breaks the immersion is her smiles .. they look as fake as it goes as her eyes aren't smiling at all and even the mouth looks wrong, especially from a bit of an angle

That's the GTX 690 tech demo... Old but gorgeous.

Just why I wanted this topic. I figured some wouldn't be as impressed. The main thing about her hair, that is headed in the right direction at least, is the movement. I agree it needs some work, hence why I said "nearly flawless", but that's some impressive stuff up there.
