Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Putting Wii U sales into perspective

Why are people buying the Wii U? because from what I hear is "wait for the games." just look at phenom in this thread. I'm aware games will come to every system. I'm aware I will enjoy multiple games for any system. I'm aware I don't know what games will come out for each system. If I made my decision on games I would never make a decision. How would I have known about TLOU or Beyond if I based my judgement on Halo or Mario?

No, the games will come. However, what won't change is the system itself. If I don't enjoy the actual system then there is no getting around that.

Fair point at the bottom.

My point still stands, though. People buy gaming consoles for games. When they come people will start to buy the Wii U.

So, what will need to be Nintendo's solution(s) to not sell that low?

Good question. And really... I can't see them pulling out of it though I hope I'm wrong. I'm getting a Wii U for the Zelda's.

Why don't I see them pulling out of it? Because in my OP I said Nintendo usually uses cheaper/older tech that doesn't reduce in price quickly. So I think Nintendo's price reductions would out pace cost reductions. I think multiple price drops would pull them out. So I suppose Nintendo can just keep taking a loss even though they normally dont.

So to answer your question. I think just a series of price drops will help them. The current demand is terrible and the next price drop will increase it but sales will still be low in my opinion. Then, next year if Nintendo drops again to $250 or so then baseline sales will increase again. I think they will have healthy sales then... but will they cut the price that low?

I read carefully your OP, maybe not enough, but as far as I understand you stated that relying solely on games or a price cut will lend us in dissapointment as it won't help and sales will continue being low, therefore what you wrote in this post answering my question contradicts directly with the OP.

Now I'll rise again my question from another angle: what was Sony solution for the turnaround they did with the pS3?

My post goes perfectly in line with my OP. Just because a price cut increases sales doesn't mean the sales will be high. Wii U is at a point right now that makes it negligible in sales. Increasing it by 200% still makes it less than 100k a week.

I agree though. It's just the extent of the increase we probably disagree on. Base sales are at 30k right now. If games increase it and sustain it (which no game really does) by 200% (which is massive) then it will still only be about 90k a week.

Ok.

Proud to be the first cool Nintendo fan ever

Number ONE Zelda fan in the Universe

DKCTF didn't move consoles

Prediction: No Zelda HD for Wii U, quietly moved to the succesor

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

I think wiiu is going to sell just fine, it's just not going to sell as well as wii. People may have forgotten but the wii was the "it" item to have it caught fire and everyone was buying them. It doesn't take much analysis to realize that didn't happen this time. Grandparents aren't going crazy for it, it just isn't on their radar.

So reality for the wiiu is it will sell well, Nintendo will make good money on software and in another five years they will release something new. It's not doa it just not the "it" thing to have.

Do you get my response to your first post now? So basically the Wii U's sales will increase (I state this in the OP) I just think it's sales still won't be what fans would want or are expecting. They will still be low but at least they wont be as low as they are now. If Nintendo wants to cut again next year then sales will be at a decent level. Something like 150k a week then. The question is can the cut it that much?

@OT
the 'point' max wants to make is that games and price drop can only increase nintendo sales to his vision. why not see if wedbush needs a lacky?

i can see ur trying to stay fair.. but you dont own a wii u so you're can't compare it. Nintendo software is different from konami and rockstar so you can't compare it. The streaming game tablet has a competitive price, not like a $600 bluray player, so you can't compare it.

you put it in kaz-o-vision not 'perspective'.

I don't even get why we need to bring up the PS3 as a comparison, if we already have the Gamecube. Wii-U's sales patern is almost identical to that of the gamecube and the big software didn't turn the Gamecube into a succes either.

It is? How so?

I came across a graph lately posted on the forum somewhere, ithink it was about the NPD data. The Gamecube and the Wii-U hade identical lines, with the Gamecube actually selling better. Can't seem to find it at the moment though.

How did Nintendo SW hold up against MGS3 and GTA3 during the Gamecube days? Also, the point that the Wii U is competitive is a strike against it. It means it has less room to work with and on top of that it means the demand isn't there even though it is more affordable.

I don't get why so many people can't seem to understand such a basic concept like - games sell platforms, and right now, Wii U simply doesn't have them. This has always been the case, and it will be no different for Wii U. Think about why you've gotten any game console you've bought. I'm willing to bet it was because of a particular game, or games. Consoles are nothing more than machines designed to play games. That is their puropse. So obviously, when more and better games are released, their sales will naturally rise.

Will games like Pikmin, Wonderful 101, Lego City, Monster Hunter boost sales? Probably not very much, but the fact is anyone who wants those games and doesn't own a Wii U will pick one up for them. Its sales are going to go up, hell they really have nowhere to go up at this point. Just a matter of when and how much. I personally don't think they will boost significantly, as I simply don't see the huge hits and evergreen type of titles the Wii had. The closest thing would be Mario Kart, Smash Brothers, Wii Fit, and I guess you can look at Lego City as sort of a wild card. But Nintendo needs NEW franchises to draw the mass market back. They need a new Wii Sports, and by that I don't mean a sequel but a brand new game that returns to the Wii philosophy of simple pick-up-and-play games.
