Forums - Gaming Discussion - Could a western developer make a good Turn based RPG?

I was trying to think of a good Turn based JRPG style  type game made by a western dev and realized that I couldn't think of one.  So I wondered if there have been any notable ones that I couldn't think of.

But the question I have is which western developer has the talent to make a blockbuster Turn based RPG?  Or is it soley the Japanese who can make them.

well if your talking about traditional final fantasy style then yes

anachronox

But imo, using JRPG to describe a style of game is weird. Since FF12 is essentially the exact same style as say, KoToR, yet no one would call that a WRPG.

I agree, it's a little weird.

Why can't we just separate RPGs into turn-based and action?

@OP: Your best bet for a turn-based RPG from a Western developer right now is probably the indie scene.

That being said, I'm sure all the great American and European RPG developers could make an excellent turn-based RPG if they made it a priority.

Yeah I clarified that in the OP now.  When I think JRPG I think turn based style rpg.  I wonder if Final Fantasy 12 was influenced by western RPG's Successes and that's why they changed their combat formula.

Demons Souls and Dark Souls don't really fit the mold when you thing of "jrpg" either. Well at least not for me and I love the Souls games and Jrpgs both. Just throwin that out there :p

It's an interesting question you pose in the OP. It seems like turn-based combat in "Western" RPGs has been slowly dying for a while. Or maybe just hibernating, waiting for a rebirth :)

Well, Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale are sort of hybrids and are all both great.
Temple of Elemental Evil is a Western developed turn based RPG and is a really awesome game with a deep and satisfying combat system.
Might & Magic series and other similar games show that not only can they but they have on many occassions.

Fallout 1 and 2 are turn based.

I have my doubts. Dragon quest is probably the first.

Its where the terms buff and debuff originally came from.
