Forums - Gaming Discussion - It's a mistake to think PS4/Next Xbox won't provide a generational leap in terms of graphics

I've seen people here and there proclaiming how they were disappointed in the demos they saw during the PS4 unveiling, mostly because the games didn't seem to provide any sort of generational leap over PS3/360. While I understand their concerns, it's too early to assume nothing will change as times goes by. The best and earliest examples are PS3/360 launch games. Compare them to games today and the difference is quite noticeable. A lot of the earlier games look like up-resed PS2/Xbox games. Even so, the PS4 demos we've seen look amazing if you ask me, and it will only get better. We've been down this road before, but to put it simply, developers need more time to master the hardware.

There's also so much more that goes into graphics these days. Advanced physics and AI systems, texture resolution, post processing effects, dynamic lighting and shadows, particle effects, etc. It's really up to the developers now with how they choose to harness the potential of these machines. But I have full faith they will continue to provide new, breathtaking experiences in this next gen.

It's true, and it's kind of funny. We're several months away from the release of the very first games, yet people already believe that we've seen everything that the PS4 can accomplish.

People who don't see the improvements and consider it not a significant leap don't know what they are looking at.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

People really should see the Killzone 1080p direct feed trailer.

People appear to have short memories. I seem to remember the 360's games in year one didn't look spectacular, including exclusives. And then we had Gears of War and any doubts about the system's power changed. I think November 2014 should be a good time to get an idea of what the system can do.

As for the games ... there are a lot of things going on in the background with Killzone SF. It's not just a visual bump, but the detail. Things like the way how the tiles were crumbling after the explosion, that HUGE city and the hyper detailed environment. I imagine a LOT will be displayed on screen at decent (locked) frames as well. Plus the game is sure to improve between now and launch.

Playstation = The Beast from the East

Sony + Nintendo = WIN! PS3 + PSV + PS4 + Wii U + 3DS

Very well put and what I have been thinking myself.

They haven't even released the console and games like Killzone look absolutely amazing. Its right up there with the best looking PC games out right now, if not somewhat better. That in itself is quite some feat.

Now imagine what it will look like several years down the line. Also not to mention that the improvements will be to AI and other factors which tend to get glossed over but are very important as well in making a great experience.

People said the same about the PS3/Xbox360. And the WiiU. Probably also about the Nextbox. This bickering doesn't deserve any attention.

The problem isn't the increase in graphics; the problem is the decreased return on investment into graphics.

The better things become, the less noticeable the changes are and general consumers will care less about these graphical increases.

Back when the Xbox 360 was reveal, there was a very obvious generational leap evidence in at leas some of the games. Kameo was a GORGEOUS game with massive scale and hundreds of enemies on screen, each with more detail than even the prettiest Xbox character models. Gears of War, revealed at E3 2005 was....Gears of War, and probably oneof the best examples of next gen graphics in 2005.

There was nothing like that at this press conference. There was prettier graphics on display, but they looked merely like much more polished PS3 games. They were not what I was expecting from the sort of next gen people were talking about.

As for the games being early in development...I hate to break it to you, but I've been to about three E3s at this point. I've seen dozens upon dozens of games in an early preview state. And while these games are incomplete and have their glitches and frame rate issues, the graphical fidelity on display is pretty much what you'll get in the final product, aside from the additional polish such as fewer/no graphical glitches, a smoother frame rate, etc. Being early in development does not mean the games will look significantly better in nine months. It means that a significant amount of the game is incomplete, if not unplayable.

It is most definitely true that developers have not begun to capture the PS4's potential in these early games. But this is probably the first console reveal where I've not seen any games that look like a generational leap. Indeed, the impression I got from the press conference is that the next generation, at least on PS4, is going to be a much more polished current generation.

That being said, the last gen and the Wii U don't got anything on that extreme amount of polish and detail that is now possible. But as someone who's never really cared about accurate lighting and thread counts in car seats, I can't say I care. At least, not yet.

I have a feeling that what we got now is just a taste. Whether it's from Sony or Microsoft, the true graphical nature of the next gen will be fully unveiled at E3. Until then, I'll still remain underwhelmed by the graphics on display at that press conference, disappointed by the complete lack of PS3 b/c, and extremely excited for all of the awesome social features/cloud/recommended downloads/DS4 touchpad/Sony's continued hard on for awesome indie games/how awesome Knack is probably going to be.
