Same reason people were obsessed with the fact that Nintendo only really showed its gamepad at its reveal... even though the console was always on stage on display with another gamepad.

Its just seeing is believing. Granted Nintendo had other issues as its name and presentation left many wondering if it were just an add-on or not. At least "PS4" makes it obvious its a new console too.
