Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft employees gave $105 million to charity in 2012

Neowin

In October, Microsoft celebrated the efforts of its past and present employees who had donated a total of over $1 billion over the past 30 years to non-profit organizations. Today, the company announced that for the year 2012, its team members had donated a total of $105 million to charity.

In an email sent to Neowin, Microsoft said this was a new record for the company and was also the second straight year that donations from its employees had gone over the $100 million mark. 19,000 different nonprofit organizations benefited from the company's Employee Giving Program via cash donations, volunteer time and more.

37,000 Microsoft employees, or about two thirds of the company's workforce, participated in the Giving Program in 2012, and 40 percent of them donated over $1,000 or over 60 percent of their time. Microsoft's charity program in 2012 included the money raised by Microsoft's annual 5K Run/Walk event where 2,700 of the company's employees, friends, and family participated in that single event which raised $300,000.

Even when they leave Microsoft, a number of its ex-team members have launched their own non-profit groups; Microsoft said that over 150 such organizations have been formed by former Microsoft employees after leaving the company.
