Untrue, except for Hard drive size, which was surpassed by the 80 GB, the 60 GB NTSC version of the PS3 was the one with the most features, since then the others have been stripped of various thngs

*sigh*

he said they are dropping functionality, not just hardware.

since launch they have removed:

ps2 bc

2 usb ports

memory card reader.

now, they have added since then:

blu-ray 1.1, divx functionality, ds3 support, dvd/ps1 and ps2 upscaling, remote play functionality, improved image quality (rgb full, super white hdmi), media sharing/streaming, this could go on, but the rest i feel are minor.

i dont know about you but to me it seems they have made the ps3 ALOT more functional than not.

so they dropped GAMING functionality and added MEDIA functionality?

to MOST consumers, that is a BAD deal...consumers care more about playing GAMES on their GAME CONSOLE than media functionality

Jees, if people are complaining about not having bc then they need to get off their ass and buy one while it does. Its quite simple. They were moaning that it was too expensive before. Sony cant do both things. Price was the most important factor to sort out. Either buy a 40 gig and wait for software emulation, or buy a bc one when its announced they are going to be pulled.

If you can't afford one, then thats harsh I know but there are a lot of things I want but cant afford.

Ynwa.

Hopefully by the time it gets down to $150-200 and has some decent games to buy they will have a BC model available, since that's when I will consider getting one.

SSBB Friend Code = 5455-9050-8670 (PM me if you add so I can add you!)

Tetris Party Friend Code = 116129046416 (ditto)

Multiple models is always a bad idea.

Keeping the 80gb around is really the only choice for PS2 gamers who haven't made the jump and would love to keep their collection. Now, Sony is saying 'Either buy the PS3 now and have one that will play your PS2 games or miss out altogether.'

Ok, I don't think cutting the 80gb is a good idea but come on now. This is a but false.

Those PS2 owners thinking about making the jump might, you know, have PS2s ........

As I have stated so many times before, if you want to win fans, don't shaft them. How can anyone buy something after being lied to? Anyone that does supports the habit. Sony stated core values included BC. Then, they axe full BC less than a year into the PS3's cycle. Then, they decide to introduce a player that has PS1 BC, but not their top-selling PS2? And then to say 'Buy another PS2' when the company stated their CORE VALUE was BC ... no. Sorry. Doesn't compute.

If I were still on the fence, and Sony is shouting to me 'Get with the program!' and buy a PS3 ... I don't enjoy being yelled at, first, and second, only an officer with a pistol - my wife, my mom and dad - are the only folks who tell me what to do. It's my money - and to tell me 'If you still want to play PS2 games, get a PS2.' Thanks a million, Sony. I can't believe folks can be drones ...

What incentives do PS2 gamers still on the fence have? Correct me if I'm wrong, but if a guy tells his date 'Here's the agenda,' doesn't consider her feelings and just does what he wants to do, without asking for her input, it will be a. a very short date or b. the woman is so desperate and clueless she doesn't care.

Regardless, the relationship is going nowhere fast.

I have bought a PS1, a PS2 and enjoyed playing PS1 ones on my PS2. Sony said it was a core value - and then, they change it and say it's unnecessary? What about rumble? It's last-gen ... yeah ... and then, after settling with Immerison, here it comes ... and fools will rush out and buy it - and Sony's laughing at 'em.

I am getting a 40gb PS3, but you can bet I am not paying for it. I wanted a 60gb PS3, and had one on layaway, but I got a PS3 for just a few games ... and trust me, that's the only way I would ever buy a 40gb PS3. I wouldn't pay a company one red cent that drops core values just to pimp Blu Ray and shafts folks.

The only thing that I can say in response to madskillz's oratory is

Amen.

First off, i gotta say i agree wholeheartedly with madskillz.

Second, i've said like a trillion times that "Buy a PS2" is not a solution, most people don't wanna mess with cables all the time, or play without upscaling on their HDTV (YOU are the ones saying that HDTV adoption rate is rising not me).
Also with the PS3 emulation you can play with wireless controllers.

Third, what makes you think that Sony can drop their PS3 price THAT fast? I mean, Microsoft hasn't even lowered their price by 100$ and the 360 is in the market for more than 2 years.

Don't you think they'd like to make profit off of their console sales sometime?

try to see the argument from other peoples' perspectives, not just your own...

say you have a ps2 that isn't working...it'll cost you $130 to replace it

alternatively, you could buy a $400 ps3 and get blu-ray, online, hdd, and ps3 games PLUS your ps2 games

that's only $270 extra, only 20 more then wii and cheaper than 360

wait, what's that? the $400 won't play ps2 games? now that value proposition is lost and it's a $400 (or 370 if i buy the 80gb version) proposition, which is much harder for most consumers to justify

Same reason that MS cut the price of the XBox after a few months on the market - they are behind and can't afford to be left in the dust by their competitors.

Remember that MS didn't drop the price of the 360 in 2006 because the PS3 was so overpriced that it wasn't seen as necessary.

In 2007, the couldn't have a large drop because they had taken a big hit with the RROD warrantee.

Now, there should be nothing to prevent MS from having a steep price drop for all it's consoles ($70-100), just as the PS2 was able to do in 2002.

Read it and they should do this. And only have the 40GB on the market.

That makes the most sense to me. I thought the 80GB was selling the best. Unlike many I think the price is fine where it's at. Keeps the riff raft out lol. Seriously they should lower it next year.

Agreed, but still Sony did it too... twice.
