I agree that a DLNA compliant device is much better... I had Serviio + SamsungTV two years ago and was suprised how well it worked.

He should have specified that as "most common low-mid res streaming format". The good stuff all is mkv, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a site that streams in mkv. If you have one - please PM me :)
mkv and mp4 both have the same video codec in side x264 (h264) but are different containers that is all.
mkv allows multiple audio streams and soft subs to be embedded where as mp4 does not.

Don't want to start confusing containers and codecs... mkv is common for HD content, meanwhile MP4's are substituting the good old avi. EDIT: beat by Cobretti2.
OT: I don't think I mentioned that Plex transcodes, meaning in broad terms that your content doesn't need to be mp4.
