Forums - Gaming Discussion - “Skyrim was generic” says Witcher 3 game Director

Yeah skyrim's battle system put me right off.

Oh no, not this pattern again - whenever some dev manages to get few games that are good and have nice sales, the ego talk starts. Seems like another Cevat Yerli in making....

No, they have some praise for Skyrim too. But Like he was saying about naming 5 characters, I dont think I could name 5 decent characters from Skyrim ether. And dat terrible combat.

I can't name 5 characters from all the Elder Scrolls together - not to mention Might and Magic which I like 10x more. Those are just not that types of games, they are world, not narrative driven.

ES comes from computer RPGs, where there has always been quite clear distinction between world and narrative games. Now, I do prefer when they mix both and make perfect blend (like Gothic or Fallout 1/2), but to neg the games cause of lack of narrative and memorable characters to me seems like not understanding the genres in the first place.

Since when did memorable characters define a good game?

Fantastic open world RPGs such as The Elder Scrolls, Dark Souls, Fallout, Dragon's Dogma and Two Worlds have hardly any memorable characters but they are superior to the Witcher on so many other levels.

It's a great game with generic tendencies.

It's characters and quests were definitely generic and unmemorable....

It's combat system lacked any real depth, but still incredibly fun in its simplicity...

It's been awhile, but the story was pretty close to generic ish too iirc....

But besides those flaws, the game is fucking fantastic....

Yes, they should learn from their flaws, but also learn from their strengths....

If they want to look at skyrim as generic, they should definitely not ignore what makes it great at the same time, else they could have a unremarkable game themselves

He is correct.

I agree.

As for NPCs, yeah it´s ridiculous how they react after your accomplishments....lost count of how many times a guard said "let me guess, someone stole your sweetroll", never mind I was a badass who had pretty much saved the world, killed dozens of dragons.

The world in the game is beautiful, vast, but when you look past that, there are some major cracks in 'Skyrim´s armor'..overall it´s a very good game, but I´m amazed it has sold so much.

Generic is good though.
People like the familiar, aka generic. They know what it is, and what to expect.

70 % Generic
30 % New
---
100 % Skyrim or short for ">10 million sales"

In all accounts, the witcher should become more generic itself.

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

So I played Skyrim for about 60 hours and it is only roughly the 2nd proper open world RPG (after Fallout 3) and it was fun... but the game has oh so many flaws

The game's combat is frankly quite bad, the characters aren't really that interesting and the AI is awful. But it was surprisingly addictive.

I found the Witcher 2 to be more interesting, but it never really got me addicted, I still haven't finished it, though that is mostly due to Far Cry 3 and the games' difficulty

Story wise, bethesda games arent super. Fallout is usually quite good because of the setting but Elder scrolls tends to be generic.
