Forums - Gaming Discussion - Google to open retail shops: Report

Google has made an indelible mark on the world wide web with its offerings and services, and now it may be making its foray into the real world with retail chains. Citing an extremely reliable source, technology blog 9to5google has said that the internet search giant will enter the retail business by opening its first-ever outlets in the US.

The report claims that Google "is in the process of building stand-alone retail stores in the U.S. and hopes to have the first flagship Google Storesopen for the holidays in major metropolitan areas." The holiday season in the US starts from November and lasts till mid-January.

Wondering what Google will sell at its stores? The report says that the company's primary objective in opening its own outlets is not to generate sales but to inform users about its hardware products and give them a hands-on user experience. The current crop of personal tech hardware that the online search giant offers includes Chromebooks as well as smartphones and tablets under its Nexus range.

The report says the tech titan decided to open its own store chain when it was finalising the plans for Google Glass. It said, "The leadership thought consumers would need to try Google Glass first hand to make a purchase. Without being able to use them first hand, few non-techies would be interested in buying Google's glasses (which will retail from between $500 to $1,000)." Along with Glass, Google can also give a demonstration of its upcoming X-Phone, X-Tablet, driverless cars etc at these stores.

A listing on Google Jobs says that the company is looking for an engineer who can develop, test and deploy point of sale systems, a crucial part of retail chains. Apple and Microsoft, two of the fiercest rivals of Google, already have their own stores.

Driverless cars? Did I just fall asleep for 20 years?

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

I guess you'll have to leave your bag in the front desk and, while you shop, Google will scan your bag's contents in order to deliver better advertisement service to their customers (not you, the real ones that pay for the ads).

lol it's not as futuristic as you think it is anymore. They are working on it, as with the glasses, and will be shown sometime in the future. Here are a couple of videos on the matter :)

Google is growing at a fast rate!

These guys are such a beast of a company, they are so so so Strong is incredible.

i dont use much of Google, i use Youtube ALOT and Google Search since Bing is still BETA but Gmail needs a new Look Outlook outclasses it by a longshot, also Google Drive is confuse that i have to acess Google and Drive, Skydrive and DropBox are so much more functional.

I use all Google products except Android but Google Drive, Gmail need a revamp. Those are great servisse but competition is giving us something better and with more space already.

Maps wise Nokia is still king but Google and Bing Maps are both really good, just not as good.

Still Google is a Beast and those Stores will be huge in a few years.

PLEASE DONT PUT THOSE STORES CLOSE TO APPLE AND MICROSOFT STORES.

Since Apple and Microsoft have introduced new stores lately, this comes as no surprise. Google wants in on a piece of that Brick-and-Mortar pie!

I don't much care for Google and how they completely disregard the privacy of people.

Google Game System incoming.

This, or actually Ouya and its other android clones look like they're gonna take a bit of market share away from the big three, leaving them with a bit less $$$$$.  There is actually a  small market for a console selling low-end games as XBL and the PSN make loads of money off of games like this.
