Forums - Sony Discussion - Stop calling the Origional playstation....PSX

So that is what psx is. Thanks for clarifying that for me. Oh and it will be called that from now on. You just made it a point for others to refer to it as that.

A commonly misheld abbreviation for it. It officially was never abbreviated to PSX - that was a term for the devs. Plus you have to consider if PSX was an official term for it, then why did they name a later console the PSX?

Magazines are not inherently true. Some people derped hard and kept on using the dev term for it once it had been released to the consumer. In other words, parts of the media misled the public.

So basically your argument is that if it's not official, don't use it.

Well, that's just dumb, sorry. It's an unofficial name, just like Kaz is an unofficial name for Kazuo Hirai. Should we stop using that too?

Good God.

We get it, it's unofficial. Is that it? Cause we knew that since page 2 and well before that.

We don't call the 360 the Xenon, so why call the Playstation the PSX? More so when the PSX is an entirely different console it only makes sense to use a smarter abbreviation instead of potentially causing confusion between the two. This is further highlighted as the term "PSX" wasn't particuarly used outside of the USA to refer to the Playstation - the term never appeared in the Official Playstation Magazine.

In this very thread you already have the covers of magazines from Croatia and Poland that include PSX in the name. How can you still claim that it wasn't particularly used outside of USA? It was used all over the world. That's the only term that I've ever known for the first Playstation console. People still use it, because they have always used it to describe this console. The fact that some term becomes a part of the language and is commonly used in a given meaning makes it valid, no matter if its origin is "official" or not. The lack of a Sony stamp isn't more important than the fact that for millions of people around the globe Playstation = PSX.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

My intentions are to show that this thread is stupid, and that your telling others that using it is a mistake is stupid.

Those are my intentions, and I stand by them.

So calling something by the correct name, and not the name of another console, is stupid.

Because PSX wasn't and isn't a name for the Playstation - it's the name of a PS2 DVR.  PSX was never used in the official magazines. No matter how many people incorrectly use a term, that doesn't "correct" the term. If everyone started calling the Xbox "puddles" would that be it's name? Nope.
People should stop using it because it's no longer just an incorrect term but now specifically the name of another console. Habits are hard to break, but not impossible.....

Tell you what we get it. 10 years after people constantly used PSX a device came out only in Japan that _could_ somehow cause confusion. I wasn't aware of any.

Yet, people used the codename's abbreviation, codename which almost became the final name, and they stuck to it because it had a good ring. All the power to them.

We get your points, they don't show how using PSX regardless is an incorrect thing.

Drill this deep into your head. The PSX is not a different console. It's a codename for the console.

Now we are getting somewhere.

What should he do after he drills it?

^You're gonna be looking for a long time because I'm not one to gang up on people. ;)

Look. If you're that concerned about it then I suggest you go back in time and do something about the millions of people around the globe that used it. Because those that grew up with that abbreviation won't stop using it, no matter how much you whine about it.

I'm still watching. This time I'm sexier! LOL

Not sure what your into.

LOL Just having some fun.

I'll put it to you this way. The PSX you are talking about is irrelevant and nobody even knows what it is, except for like 17 people and most of them are in this thread.

If you are an old timer (I started with NES when it was in its' prime) you will recall that (at least in the U.S.) all magazines (the only real media at the time for this hobby) referred to the original PlayStation as the PSX. It was the code name, what people called it before and after it was announced.

It sort of stuck, because PlayStation always sounded dorky and was too long to type. I will always remember it as the PSX, and so will tons of people that actually got to experience the greatness of that system as it was happening. The PS1 or PSOne is that small redesign that Sony released later on.

When I see people type PS1 instead of PSX, I think "young whipper snapper". Almost like you're looking back at the thing because you hopped on with the PS2, or god forbid the PS3.

Do you have similar feelings with calling GameCube GCN? It's the official abbreviation of the console. Makes no sense, but it's been ingrained in people's minds for over a decade now. Why change it?
