Forums - Sony Discussion - Stop calling the Origional playstation....PSX

What?! That was the common abbreviation and used widespread back then and was even printed on labels and used in magazines at least here in the states it was a very common term for consumers

A commonly misheld abbreviation for it. It officially was never abbreviated to PSX - that was a term for the devs. Plus you have to consider if PSX was an official term for it, then why did they name a later console the PSX?

Magazines are not inherently true. Some people derped hard and kept on using the dev term for it once it had been released to the consumer. In other words, parts of the media misled the public.

So basically your argument is that if it's not official, don't use it.

Well, that's just dumb, sorry. It's an unofficial name, just like Kaz is an unofficial name for Kazuo Hirai. Should we stop using that too?

Good God.

We get it, it's unofficial. Is that it? Cause we knew that since page 2 and well before that.

Btw whenever I hear ps1 I automatically think of my family computer we had back in the 80s. It was 'officially' called an IBM PS1 with a 286 processor and 10 MB hard drive so we need to stop calling it the ps1 because it may cause confusion.

We don't call the 360 the Xenon, so why call the Playstation the PSX? More so when the PSX is an entirely different console it only makes sense to use a smarter abbreviation instead of potentially causing confusion between the two. This is further highlighted as the term "PSX" wasn't particuarly used outside of the USA to refer to the Playstation - the term never appeared in the Official Playstation Magazine.

Drill this deep into your head. The PSX is not a different console. It's a codename for the console.

PS-X = code name for the Playstation.

PSX = different console.

PSX in reference to the Playstation came around from people contracting the dev name for the Playstation. So really using PSX in reference to the Playstation is wrong on two accounts.

That's way later. By that time, people had already used PSX (no dash) so much that your argument is obsolete.

From Gamenow:

PS-X
Became: PlayStation

As an unknown entity, Sony’s original PlayStation could have been named anything during development. PS-X – an acronym for its full codename of PlayStation Experimental – was even to be the final name when SCEA’s marketing department found out through early research that the PlayStation brand was hated among consumers. So close was Sony to calling the console PS-X that many still refer to the PlayStation this way even now.

Simple really.

Yeah it is simple. The Playstation was never actually called the PS-X. Anyone who called it that was calling it by an obsolete name, and anyone who currently does it isn't just reffering to an obsolete name, they are using the name of an entirely different console.

There really isn't anything more to say - I'm not sure what your intentions are...The PSX is the name for a PS2 DVR, never was and never has been an official name for the Playstation therefore there is no reason to refer to the Playstation as the PSX.

ps1, psx, psone

I really don't care!

My intentions are to show that this thread is stupid, and that your telling others that using it is a mistake is stupid.

Those are my intentions, and I stand by them.
