I was disappointed when i was playing Ni No Kuni, cause i expected some kind of Arietty easter egg at the beginining of the game when Oliver is sneaking around the house at night

:(

How awesome would that have been? Any other Ghibli film reference would have been great. Surprised there weren't any as far as I can tell. Maybe I'm just missing it...

I'm only like 15 hours in. Although no references, those CGI scenes are gorgous!

Though not as part of any top 3, i would recommend a couple of very un-Ghibli gems from the studio: Only Yesterday, and Ocean Waves. And The cat returns is awesome, like a very contemporary, smart fairy tale(something western studios still struggle finding the right balance for).

Don't you mean those hand drawn scenes? I wish there were more of them. There is a nice long one after you beat shadar
The hand drawn scene in Hamelin with all the buildings moving out of the way is Ghibli at full throttle.

The cgi comes close to the hand drawn quality but still falls short. Maybe next gen.

Cgi, hand drawn, lol all the same. What I meant was the scenes actually animated by Ghibli. I've seen that one! But not during my playthrough. Saw in on youtube accidently lol.

It seems like many people in this thread like Nausicaa. I've never even heard of it!

It's really not the greatest, If you're on a mission to see them all then by all means, but it's kind of dated and feels like an 80's movie imo.

1. Spirited Away
2. Grave of the Fireflies
3. Princess Mononoke

I just want to add that Miyazaki is a genius, and that Ghibli is one of the best animation studios ever created, second only to Disney.

I agree BUT I put Ghibli on top. Rounding it out should be Pixar then Disney.

Yes, yes, and yes! Disney may have been great pioneers of the genre, but in nowadays it's just Pixar.

Now, as someboday have pointed out Nausicaa is not Ghibli, then my top 3 would be

1. Princess Mononoke

2. Grave of the fireflies

3. Totoro

1. Howl's Moving Castle. Just glorious looking, and the music's fabulously fantastic. I've several versions of the soundtrack on my computer/iPod, and I know every single song by heart. I've listened to them so many times, if they were on CD's, they'd have broken.

2. Spirited Away. Again, the animation and art direction's insanely top-notch. It's crazy. Also, the story really moved me. The characters are funkily out-there and loveable.

3. Hmm. Totoro. I just can't help it, it's a classic. The animation and art, though somewhat crude when compared to Ghibli's later films, are still amazing. It's got a totally unique light-hearted feel to it, and some catchy music, too. It's just utterly charming.

Mononoke's a close 4th. Loved that one, too.

Howl's moving castle soundtrack is fantastic.

1. Princess Mononoke - Just a superb work of animation and remember getting it years ago on VHS and watching it over and over in awe. I love the characters and world and ideas it contains. It is close to perfection to me, and one I can always watch on a whim.

2. Spirited Away - This maybe the most beautiful work by Ghibli as some segments are jaw dropping and the story and characters are fun as well. I would say if I introduced the studio to anyone, this would be the first work I'd show.

3. Grave of the Fireflies - I saw this long after it came out, so animation suffers, but man that story punches you in the gut. One of those rare works that I sat in silence for 15 minutes after viewing.
