I started playing this series since the first game; and in that game Dante was not camp or wacky. He was just Dante, he wasn't anime, he wasn't camp, he didn't surf on missiles, he didn't go over the top with any camp behaviour.

Actually, Kamiya's inspiration for Dante was the main character of Cobra, a manga that was later adapted to anime...

If you think that anime is only limited to "over the top" or "wacky" stuff, you're completely wrong... You can find all sorts of stories within the medium, and certainly any kind of story that appears in a Japanese-developed game. They come from the same culture after all.

Yeah I know what you mean, like Studio Ghbili offers a completely different animation style from other forms of anime.

Its possible I didn't use the word anime correctly. I was reffering to how the character in DMC4 was very different from the original character he came from, which was also something advocated by the creator of the series. Thats a specific style of anime which is camp and wacky which is not what the original game started off with.

Using the term "anime" to refer to some specific and superficial traits of the medium is something I see very often, and is something that particularly bothers me as a fan of it. But as long as you're aware that there's more to it, then ok. I was actually surprised to see you do it, given how Ni no Kuni is in your signature...

I did understand what you meant, disagreements aside. In any case, I don't see how the previous changes in the series justify everything that has been introduced by Ninja Theory here. I don't agree with the idea of reboots in general, but if you're going to do it, what's the point of changing everything to beyond recognition ? As a fan of the old Mortal Kombat games, I can still perfectly recognize the characters/settings in the reboot, even though I don't really care for the game itself. That's a reboot done right to me. One that resets the universe/story without changing its fundamental traits, either from its themes or its characters. But alas, nothing that hasn't been mentioned before...

It's worth mentioning here that I actually do enjoy "over the top" stuff, more often than not. And the 3rd game was the one that got me into the series.

@zero129

I think pretty much anyone that has been following the game for one reason or another has already heard of that... And of course, you can even pay Capcom for the privilege of dressing this Dante as the classic one, if you desire. But the thing is, you can put a tuxedo on a goat, but it's still a goat...

I can't speak about how this Dante grows as a character in the game because I haven't seen enough of it, but I do know that even if it does get closer to the old one at the end, it wouldn't be enough. Not only would you have to endure this "immature" Dante for most, if not the whole game, but you also have to accept all the other changes that many people dislike of the story, setting, aesthetics and rest of the characters. I for one don't like the idea of turning this fantasy series into yet another "conspiracy theory" story about the media/goverment and fighting real-life parodies as some shallow form of "social commentary", nor do I appreciate the "gritty" look and everything I've seen about the dialogue/cutscenes. At this point, I'm quite sure I wouldn't like this game even if it was called something other than "Devil May Cry".

Honestly, the only thing I could praise about the game from everything I've seen is some of its use of colors and backgrounds. Can't think of anything else.

Thing is Dante's character does't even get anywhere close to himself.  Either as the brooding man in the first game, or the over the top joker in the third/fourth game.  Zero is just mentioning that his hair color turns completely white in the last cutscene of the game.

Well, I did read some comments that claimed this Dante "evolved" throughout the game, although I also read people disagreeing, so I don't know... I have to give the benefit of the doubt here... What's your take here ?

And I want to believe that zero129 was talking about more than just the hair when he brought that up...

That headline really does cover it. DMC fan assholes have no one to blame but themselves if this series is over. Nina Theory gave us a great and much needed reinvention and update for the series, and most fans couldn't get over freakin white hair. They're an absolute disgrace to the gaming community.

I can say I liked the game, I hated the demo and I hated the new Dante ever since they announced it, but now almost at the finish of the game, I think he's okay.

So, let me get this straight. They completely change the well loved main character, make drastic changes to the gameplay, ignore all complaints by the fans--going so far as to troll them with that ridiculous little "Dante Wig" scene, and generally take a massive shit all over the original fanbase, and it's the fan's fault that the game flopped? Now, I am by no means a DMC fan, but what the hell did Capcom expect after the crap they pulled? They basically sent the game out to die with their attitude.

Nothing to do with a nerdboy boycott. We all know the game ended up being decent, regardless of Dante's hair colour.

Just further proof the market is shrinking...or it's that end of generation thing where games start selling less. It actually did ok even if it's down slightly from dmc4.

yeah pretty much

i think it's a tie between DmC and PSASBR for the most disgraceful death

They brought that upon themselves by disrespecting the fanbase. If they want to blame someone, it should be Capcom for rebooting something that didn't need a reboot.

Not to mention at the end of a system's lifecycle,  who would have thought this would be a major seller, honestly.  Even Call of Duty is seeing slower sales here.

I think it is massively ignorant to blame the fans.
