PS3 12GB HDD upgrade issue, help!

Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 12GB HDD upgrade issue, help!

Hi all! I have done an extensive amount of googling, but no answers avail.

Here the problem, I got a new PS3 12gb and brought a 1tb Toshiba notebook HDD to slot in for a big upgrade.

PS3 formatted the 1tb HDD then copied data from the 12gb flash to the 1tb. (update the latest firmware on the 12gb before copying)

THEN somewhat it need to "rebuilt data" (don't know what the point of this crap!)

At 50 - 60% it come to this

Click "OK" and it just repeat everthing again (along with the failure) been doing this multiple times, very annoying!!

It certainly not the 1tb HDD faulty as it just fine on my PC and it the right HDD for the PS3 as it went through 2 stages of proccess before the messed up 3rd stage, also the PS3 runs fine (plays games, hook up to the net etc) And I don't think there's a limit to HDD capacity for the PS3.

So what the hell is the issue??? Am hoping I can get solution here to avoid calling Sony up as it just a big hassle (pretty nuch every company call line sucks!!)

Greatly appreciated if it can get fixed by fellow gamers,

Cheers and happy gaming!

When I got the HDD it was on NTFS then I formatted to FAT32 with allocation unit size of 16k, is that what you're after?

hm.. strange, you seem to have done everything right..

you should try to format that hdd in a different PS3 to see if that shows the same results

i figure you had to format the hard drive to the system. i'll go get some other PS3 owners.

Yeah I thought I did the right thing!!

I thought of doing it on my 250gb slim (1st slim) to test it, but I'm worrying that it will stuff up the number of PSN+ accounts, you know 2 account per user.

I actually tried both ways (PC formatting and PS3 formatting) but neither works! Thanks for helping!

Well the 12gb flash built in the PS3 acts as a thumbstick when upgrading a new HDD. PS3 copy 12gb (which has the firmware) to the HDD is the same as you would do with a thumbstick!

I think this actually changed with a firmware version. Guessing they changed it once the PS3 got hacked.

I remember I had to do this in my phat as my firmware was too new.
