Forums - Gaming Discussion - IDC: Apple’s iPad dropped to 43.6% tablet share in Q4, Samsung took second with 15.1%, Amazon third with 11.5%

Speaking of Google, it looks like the company’s Nexus 7 tablets haven’t managed to help Asus, their manufacturer. The Taiwanese company saw its share slip from 7.8 percent to 5.8 percent despite what IDC says were “continued strong shipments” of Google’s 7-inch device.

In fifth place, Barnes & Noble shipped close to 1 million units, increasing its share to 1.9 percent, up from 0.7 percent. The company may not be an Amazon, but it clearly knows what its customers want.

The table shows Asus actually increasing market share and Barnes & Noble losing it. We will get Nexus 7 shipment numbers soon, but they will probably be around 6 million lifetime since Asus already declared it was shipping almost 1 million per month.

Less power to the market leader is good for consumers, Apples have become more and more ridiculous and the only ones who benefit from this near monopoly state is them.

Given Apple's closed ecosystem, this was inevitable. It's all about them staving off the competition and keeping as much marketshare as possible, not trying to "win" this thing (even though they're handily winning in the profit department, which is what really matters to a company).

Which is why I thought they should have released an iPad Mini at $299 or less almost a year before they did so. Grabbing that price point and size early would have added at least a year to their market dominance.

Either way, diversity is good for consumers.

This is the real question.

iOS is now less than half.

Well considering Android would be:

Samsung + Amazon + Asus

-------------------------------------

32.4% Android total marketshare vs. 43.6% iOS marketshare.

Android growth and iOS decline looks good. Begun, the fall of iOS tablet dominance has.

Good. 900k for a new market entrant that's priced at £500 is impressive. It was only available for 2 months of the quarter aswell, which makes it even more impressive

Comparing with the first entrants of Nexus line and Kindle, it isn't impressive at all.
