Will next gen be better for JRPG's?

Yes 37 35.24%

No 36 34.29%

What happened to Square Enix? 32 30.48%

Total:105

Yeah, Xenoblade is one of the best ever and the Last Story is pretty good. I don't mind the action/rpgs as long as they're as good as Mass Effect.

Monster Hunter Tri was also an excellent JRPG if you count it as such. (It's an RPG made in Japan, but somehow I think people won't count it because of it's battle system and lack of story focus)

In the home console space, the japanese market pretty much thrives on the Sony platforms

notice how the japanese market pretty much sunk as soon as the PS3 came to the scene. The majority in japan tends to buy everything on the PlayStation. almost every known japanese game has sold less than it normally would on PlayStation 3 this gen(even though they all still sold the most on ps3 compared to other versions). Nintendo had the Japanese market on lock with the Wii but the games just didn't sell on it for some reason besides the Marios and what not(or atleast they would have sold more on ps3)

the survival of the japanese home console market pretty much depends on Sony for the most part. If Sony does well then the japanese market does well but if Sony doesn't do well then the japanese market wont do well

The market didn't "BOOM" like it was supposed to when PS3 arrived. The price of the ps3 kept everybody away from it. If the people of the japanese market don't buy the console then who is going to buy the games?

the 1st impression is a killer so of course when games came out on the expensive ass console the people didn't buy them. which then gave devs the impression that something was wrong. They stopped making games like they used to because of this. the devs who still made jrpgs all jumped to the handhelds just to BARELY SURVIVE because of Sony and their decision to bid theirselves out with the console price

Wii U sold like 400k 1st week in japan and i read that ps2 surprisingly sold A LOT more than that when it came out at it's $299 price point and it was also selling at a good pace throughout it's years. The PS3 launched at $599 and sold a little over 80k it's 1st week.

at this point, the home console part of the japanese market can boom again BUT it all depends on what Sony does this generation with the PS4.

it is simple really. all they have to do is price the PS4 at $399. the market will thrive again if Sony plays their cards right. The japanese devs wont be scared to make games for the PS4. They won't have to worry about their games not selling well because the PS4 will be a lot cheaper than what PS3 launched at so the REAL gamers and younger crowd can get their hands on a PS4 more easily FROM JUMP! They can also buy their games early on. devs will be able to take more risks

the absence of the Japanese market this gen was Sonys fault

it all depends on Sony

The console market started slow in Japan (although the Wii did pretty well out of the gate) but at this point in time the PS3 has enough games for people in the JP market to buy it, and an active enough userbase for most games to do well. However, the PS3 is no PS2. The 'problem' is that Japan has reeeeeeeally moved on to handhelds. DS and PSP were very healthy, and although the Vita is doing badly now the 3DS is filling in the shoes of the DS and PSP. Combined with that is the fact that JP publishers have fell behind in HD development. SE still doesn't have Versus out in 6+ years and has really fell from their status in their PS1/PS2 days.

I think the issue is far bigger than just "Sony priced the PS3 too high." That may have been an issue initially but could not have wrecked the JP console market up to this point.

they went and stayed on the handhelds because of the ps3

everything usually sells on the PS home consoles but they didn't with PS3 so what other choice did they have? The PlayStations are the consoles that the japanese devs fall back on if you know what i mean. PS3 was too high though. PS3 is no PS2 because the PS2 launched at $299 and PS3 launched at $599. PS3 could have been just as good as the PS2 but it was just too high priced. The devs made all their games on the handhelds so it was too late when Sony finally got down to a reasonable price years later.

the EXACT issue is ps3 being priced too high because everything you could say that went wrong will all eventually come back to the ps3 costing too damn much

i GUARANTEE the japanese market will do a lot better during the 8th gen if Sony launches the PS4 at $399. It doesn't even matter what the other companies do

what did all these devs say when all these PlayStation known games went multiplat? they were saying sh!t like they want to maximise sales and what not right? now why would they say that? I bet anything that you think of will eventually be brought back to the ps3's high ass price

Sony needs to be atleast remotely affordable($399) from the beginning this time around mainly for the sake of japan

I think Square was going to stumble regardless though

What?
Is this a joke?
PSP and DS alone have more Jrpgs than other gen consoles put together
Plus.....hello?...Wii? oh yeah right, you grew up...

PD: The best home console Jrpg this gen is Arc rise Fantasia

lots of jrpgs appeared on the 360 early this gen and it did not go well

MS never really gave them the spotlight and 360 fans never rewarded them with sales

it took the Japanese some years until recently that they started getting out of their shell once again this time on the PS3

...and Atlus is absent.

Actually those early 360 games sold pretty good for jrpgs. According to vgchartz Vesperia,The last remnant, Lost odyssey, infinite undiscovery and blue dragon all sold alright. Their also alll over half a million on here. Dont know if thats right or not but its there. Im willing to say those game ive just mentined are better thana lot of the ps3 exclusives like disgea, Atelier Roronoa, cross edge and hyper demension(EWW). Though there are some great ones as well.

I have had a lot of fun with jrpgs this gen especially those earlier ones for the 360 I do think theres less available, but I wouldn't say theres a lack of great ones. No genre this gen or last just kept putting out top notch super good games in my opinion.

yea, the 360 jrpg library is still better than the ps3 jrpg library here in America

PS3 has been doing well to catch up lately with stuff like Ni No Kuni and the upcoming Tales Of Xillia but it's been a very long time coming

the absolute gems on 360 are Tales Of Vesperia and Lost Odyssey. Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant, Blue Dragon and Magna Carta are honorable mentions but Lost Odyssey and Vesperia is where it's at on the 360

and they DIDN'T sell pretty good for JRPGs of their stature. They sold pretty good FOR XBOX jrpgs

I was reffering to console gaming. And I did grow up but I have never owned a Nintendo console so I naturally forgot to list games like Xenoblade and The Last Story in the OP.

You should rename the thread, the words "Home console" should appear in the title

PD: Do yourself a favor, get a Wii and a copy of Arc rise fantasia, The last story and Xenoblade
If not, for whatever silly reason, download the Dolphin emu and the isos, and play them in full HD, here are the LINKS............xD joking

And after playing them come and tell us...

Anyone else think their was a lack of great RPG's this generation? Last gen had a lot of awesome and wonderful RPG's but this gen has been very bland with a lot of average at best RPG's being released with the exception being Namco Tales of Vesperia, Xillia, and Graces. Of course this is my opinion but I would like to hear everyone elses.

Dude Nino fucking Kuni just came out, go put hundreds of hours in that game, then P4G, by that time Xilia will come out in the West.

Odd that you complain just when the genres biggest games come out in over a decade.

Well two games is hard to make up for an entire generation. Ni No Kuni and Xillia are both great RPG's no doubt about it.

I was planning on buying TLS and Xenoblade when I bought a Wii U soon.
