Some new info on how Nintendo remade the boss fights in Majora's Mask 3D, courtesy of "Iwata Asks." I bolded the salient parts.

 

Yamamura: So, instead of giving out or forcing the answers onto the players, we focused our energy on how well we can communicate the meanings of the missions to the players. By doing this, I think we were able to make the challenges more comprehendible while keeping the same level of challenge as the Nintendo 64 version.

Aonuma: A great example for this are the boss battles.

Ooiwa: That's right; Aonuma-san said that he wanted to change all of the boss battles.

Aonuma: I've been saying that all of the boss battles are weird. All of them. When you first face a boss, it is natural to start looking for its weakness so you can figure out where to attack it. However, in the Nintendo 64 version of this game, you couldn't see the weaknesses at all.

Iwata: This is because you created this game as a challenge for the users to figure it out themselves, right?

Aonuma: This would be all right if the users understood this while they were fighting. However, this turned into a game where players won by randomly attacking the boss, without really figuring out what was its weakness.

Ooiwa: I personally wanted to fix this too. After I found out we had the same concerns, we reconstructed the battles by focusing on making the objective easier to understand, ensuring that there is the "a-ha" moment for the players, and the strategic elements that are needed to take them down wherever possible.

Iwata: So, you've remade every single boss fight?

Aonuma: Every single one of them. However, their models are virtually the same as the Nintendo 64 version.

Yamamura: However, the bosses' movements and strategies to take them down have all changed, so it took about the same effort as creating the stages from scratch.

Iwata: Well you say that quite frankly, even though this is supposed to be a remake.

Yamamura: (Laughs) We put in that much effort in creating this game, so it should be more convenient to play for players that are new to this game. It should also be refreshing to play for those that have played the Nintendo 64 version.

I used to finish the game 100% within five cycles (the deku scrub one included), but in the remake I had to postpone the Pic Hibernia Temple to the third cycle, even though I usually had plenty of spare time during the second cycle. This meant that I was forced to six cycles overall because there was barely anything to do during the third one. Although the primary reason for the delay was taking too much time on day 1 of cycle 2, wandering through the town to talk to all people and see if there are any new sidequests; later on I needed more than one try on various minigames, so the cushion of about 20 hours I used to have for cycle 2 quickly evaporated.

However, it's also worth noting that my usual cycle 3-5 schedule didn't work out because there's a good bunch of things that take longer now because of the new Zora mechanics. That wasn't a real issue though, because in my original schedule there was a lot spare time during cycle 4 and 5, so postponing some of the big things didn't have any negative impact. It actually made cycle 4 and 5 (5 and 6 in my playthrough of the remake) more enjoyable because they weren't primarily focused on wrapping up sidequests that ruled each other out during previous cycles.

I'll replay the game and see what I can manage during cycle 2. It's of very high importance to finish both the swamp and the mountains during this cycle, so I may have to cut some sidequests and spread them out to later cycles.

Nice review!

That bit about the Bomber's Notebook worries me. My wife will be playing for the first time and I'm worried she won't be able to pinpoint the exact timeline for each NPC.

Cool, I'll get that guide as well probably when it releases here. Still have the original game's guide too!

Anyway, played through the first cycle as the Deku Scrub now, got to say it looks quite pretty graphically. A good upgrade, Deku Link especially now looks like the famous picture of him looking with a sad face down at a flower in his hand. Naturally I went total auto-pilot and thus actually failed the Bomber's test in first try because I was blindsided by the fact that in this game they changed the kids's hiding places .

I did notice that now, with the Happy Mask Salesman giving you the Notebook after reverting back to Hylian Link for the first time, there's a continuity error, unless the Happy Mask Salesman is actually unaffected by the reverting of time... But whatever.

(Those aren't true spoilers, but I won't spoil the fun of finding out everything new for yourself)
