Forums - Sales Discussion - We need to talk about the Wii U sales, what happened?

Sales this week is practically on par with the Wii, is Nintendo buyers scared to purchase the Wii U because of how the Wii turned out around the end?

Is the name holding it back, should Nintendo have veered away from the Wii name and made it look like something that wasn't associated with the Wii?

Why do you think sales are so low?

What can Nintendo do to bring back sales to a acceptable level?

What would you change about the Wii U?

No new games? Can't sell a system without a game to play.

I bought a Wii U thinking Nintendo was going to support it in the near term, but they have no plans to release games until mid 2013 to xmas 2013.  So we get stuck with a system that will be 1 year old by the time we get to play a worthwhile game, and that game will have been designed for a system designed in 2010.  If anyone thinks nintendo console generation last past 2015, you'll be crazy.

So you believe that they will release a new console by 2015?

No, I believe they will just let it die out like they did the Wii.

(No seriously though that thing's been sitting there for over a month now, I have 0 games to play...the earliest game I'm interested in comes out during March derp.

No, I believe they will just let it die out like they did the Wii.

I HIGHLY doubt they designed this very complex gamepad just to support it for 2years and 2months, they definetly designed it for it to last a good 5-6 years. With that being said, skyward sword, both kirbys, xenoblade,  last story and many more (too lazy to go look it up online) is what you call letting it die?

It's because the whole system is a mess. Nintendo almost went out of the home console business when they focused on the "core gamers" with the Gamecube. With the Wii U they tried to get both the huge mass market they got with the Wii and get some of that upmarket back that Sony and Microsoft dominate currently. But the Wii U is not mass market compatible: Nintendo's biggest insight with the Wii was that controllers were too complex for most people so they designed the Wii remote. For the Wii U they designed an abnormally big and clunky piece of controller that's even scary looking to myself and I've been a gamer for years. And, of course, they decided to abandon making disruptive products and wanted to focus on the upmarket instead which was a terrible idea.

At the same time the Wii U is also not attracting any core gamers: Nintendo promised ports of 3rd party games and there are none of them. EA is turning their back on the Wii U because they had a fallout with Nintendo about their online service. Most western developers don't want to fully support the system and the japanese devs are focused on the 3DS and PSP.

Basically instead of focusing on either the mass market or the core market Nintendo tried to succeed in getting both - but failed to get either.

No new games, and it will continue that way until end march at least.

they must have some 3rd party games coming out till there main ones hit....right?

You wanna have your opinion, then you have to respect different opinions as well.
