Why do people keep saying Nintendo is milking their franchises?

Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why do people keep saying Nintendo is milking their franchises?

IHMO, Nintendo passed the point of "Milking Franchises" many years ago and are now Milking a cow that has been dead, infested and corpse for 10 years. But that's what the people want so why spend money on any new cows.

I understand your point, but ... Mario. They brand so many things as Mario. I'm surprised Pikman wasn't a game where you control a bunch of miniature Mario pawns. I'd bet anything it was considered. And how Animal Crossing escaped Mario branding I'm not sure. Mario Crossing sounds so very Nintendo. Honestly, that's a read turn-off for me, especially since the Mario characters are so flat and uninspired. It just feels like a complete absence of creativity.

I guess I shouldn't argue with success, though. I think it's entered Pavlovian territory at this point. People would buy a Mario game about mucking out stables or sorting garbage and they would decide they liked the game even before they played it. I'm sure Sony or Microsoft would love to have a brand they could exploit to that level.

It just seems kind of blah to me to start with "OK we need to make another Zelda game, any ideas?" or "someone had a good idea for a game, let's make it a Mario title".  You know? I don't necessarily blame Nintendo for milking those cows but it's not a practice that appeals to me, either.

That does not sound like a good game, at all.

Microsoft is even worse with 360:
  1. Gears of War - 4 (with Judgement upcoming)
  2. Halo - 4
  3. Forza - 4
  4. Project Gotham Racing - 3
  5. Fable - 3
  6. Dance Central - 3

Maybe someone else already pointed out, but yes Microsoft is the worse of the 3, as they limit the number of franchises they have. Also, im pretty sure there was an Xbox live Fable game in 2D. So you can rise that to 4 if you want.

I do agree though, Nintendo is highly criticised by something that the others seems to do worse. In the case Microsoft is clearly worse. Sony has a habit of creating new franchises every gen since most of them end up failing and they try something new, but i would say that they are the most of the safe side. It all depends on what they reveal for the PS4. If the uncharted series continues or gets axed like Jak series did and if the other series carry on. I guess they milk God of war already though. 2 per system.

i thought he already did that because fable 1 was for the original xbox so 3 fable games has to mean he included the pub game. i just wonder which third pgr game he is talking about because i know only 2 for 360 but would love to have a third one.

but if we start to count the fable pub game we should also start to count every game with mario as mario game, i don't think his list would look so good for nintendo and the milking argument then.

and as big halo fan i have to say please milk more but i would like to see some other genres in the halo universe..

I think he is referring to "Fable Heroes".

Better yet, I think he was referring to:

Fable 2

Fable 3

Fable: the Journey

If you go an include XBLA games that incorporated the Fable brand then overall you would have (5) this generation, although I wouldn't really. Punt Pub games since it directly relates to Fable 2.

oh yeah i totally forgot about the "masterpiece" the journey.

but still, if i count all that as "fable", i also have to count mario galaxy, mario kart and nsmb as "mario" and can't separate that.

but damn those other fable games were really not necessary to develop.

First off, I hate iOS autocorrect, it butchered my post.

Besides that, I agree for the most part. I only count Fable 2, 3 & The Journey against the Fable franchise.

I dont mind them making sequels and different variations.

Its just...they need to do something other than making NSMB!

I wouldnt mind a yearly Super Mario Galaxy game!!!!!!!!! (People are gonna hate me for this).

The number of games isn't even the problem either, most of the IPs you listed on the Wii are at least a decade old, whereas the ones in the Sony and Microsoft section are fresh IPs.

Of course they have fresher IPs. Sony and Microsoft are both much newer to console gaming then Nintendo, and Sony was able to rely heavily on third party titles. The original Xbox was pretty much just bought to play Halo and PC ports, since most of the original IPs MS started on it were either poorly recieved critically or sold poorly (anyone remember Azurik?).

The only things from the Xbox era even worth milking for Microsoft were Halo, Fable, Project Gotham, and Forza, and as we can see aside from PG they've all been milked pretty heavily this gen. We've already begun to see plenty of milking from both companies, and I garauntee you that now that Sony can no longer rely on third party exclusives, we will continue to see them milk their own successful franchises. We've already seen it with God of War, LittleBig Planet and Uncharted.

Way too much Mario, even I'm getting tired of him

They are all very different games in terms of gameplay, but in terms of setting, and characters, they all have a lot in common. It's kinda annoying. IMO, they should of had 2D Mario, & 3D Mario and that's it. Putting Mario in everything certainly guarantees at least some success but it is a bit obsessive.

Mario Kart sells extremely well so there is no turning back now but IMO they should have just kept F-Zero as their racing game instead of abandoning it. I am very happy that Animal Crossing & Pikmin are different because they could of easily been Mario Life and 100 Mario's.

They seem to be getting a bit better though, hopefully Mario Party and the Mario Sports games are officially over in favor of Mii's. That might just be wishful thinking...

I agree. Although they really need to make a new Mario Smah Football for WiiU. You can't replace that masterpiece with Miis

I would rather them include a Mii version of it in a game like Wii Sports U

No. Just no. The powerups and general gameplay would not fit at all.
