Forums - Nintendo Discussion - WiiU - Lots of new Info - Same poor result. Why Nintendo Direct just confirms my fears.

Powerwise WiiU isn't significantly better than current gen system.  So once again Nintendo needs to provide a unique experience, that's fun, accessible and appealing to all.  Else, there's simply no reason to leave Wii/360+Kinect or PS3+Move or tablets with their simple, fun and often free games.

So today Nintendo did something daring and surprisingly out of character and spilled the beans on all their upcoming games.  Nintendo fans rejoice!!  More Zelda! More 3D Mario. More Mario Kart.  More Fire Emblem. More Yoshi. More Xenoblade (maybe) and even a HD Wind Waker.  Okay great news.  If you're a Nintendo fan.   If not... There's nothing here.   WiiU Party and a bit of new info on WiiU Fit is the only casual fare they gave and neither one of those is going to get much more than a passing glance from the casual crowd Nintendo won over with Wii.    On the flip-side, if your a core gamer but not into Nintendo franchises there's still nothing here.

I will tell you why your analysis is faulty.

First, you are assuming the PS4 and 720 will be significant leaps in technology.

Second, i recomend you watch the new Xenoblade trailer and tell me how the system produces graphics equal to current gen.

Third: I'm not a fan of most of Nintendo franchises but here is what interested me: Bayonetta 2, new Xenoblade, new Zelda, Zelda WW remake, Fire emblem (mild interest as i like Fire emblem but not a huge fan of SMT). This is obviously not all that is coming, there are secret projects, and a 3rd party nintendo direct was announced for 3rd party games.

Fourth: Who in their right mind buys a Nintendo system if they dont like any of Nintendo's games? Its like Buying a Playstation when you dont like any of the Sony games. It makes no sense.

Conclusion: You dont have enough info on what the other 2 consoles will be like and you are making assumptions of their sales without basis. Also, you are extrapolating a very one-sided and close minded view of games that interest the public or the hardcore gamers. What was shown today, in particular the new Xeno, the new Zelda and Bayonetta 2 added for example to Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate coming out soon, make this system very atractive to hardcore gamers.

Sorry, but you're hating. You have no basis here.

In the end it's all about the games.  Wii Sports is what sold the idea of motion controllers.  So despite Wii being about as powerful as a previous gen Xbox, everyone still wanted one, because it could do something the other HD systems couldn't.   At least, up until 2010 when it stopped being unique.

WiiU is a direct return to Gamecube status - catering to the Nintendo faithful with only paltry attempts to win over core/casuals.   Now moreso than ever before, I expect WiiU to emulate Gamecube in sales.   The market has grown and WiiU will get some leftover Wii love so I've no doubt WiiU will outsell GC but by returning to a red ocean strategy with aging IPs and no innovation (touch screens are not innovative in 2012) Nintendo is guaranteeing themselves a third place finish this gen.

Third place maybe, but with a nice profit, not bad at all.

I just want to know...

If Sony (and I guess MS if you want) had a "Sony Direct" of their own, one year from today (1/23/2014), what exactly could they announce that would just as effective or surpass what Nintendo did today? This is assuming the PS4 has already released but no major franchises came out during launch.

Anyone else feel like this Nintendo Direct showing was better than Nintendo's last 3 E3 press conferences combined?

it was better then the entirey of E3 2012

I agree with you in that there is a lot of repetition but I'd expect them to play it safe in the early days, Sony Is literally the only ones to have launched a new console with a whole host of AAA new IPs. I expect we'll see more orginal content next E3.

Having said that I think classing Xenoblade (codename x) in the same category as the above is completely wrong. As a Big Fan of games like FF, seeing such an amazingly rendered fantasy RPG world is something very new to a nintendo console and after today I can say they've offically sold the wii U to me.

what AAA new IP's did Sony launch with?

I'm thinking back on all consoles launches and I dont' recall any of them being anything special really.  Best one would probably be Wii U, though most of those are games already been released on other consoles months earlier so kind of pointless.

My favorite launch would probably be GC, Rogue Squadron II and Luigis mansion.  Every other console I can think of has only 1 decent game at launch.

I liked E3 2010 (Nintendo totally won), so I'd say this was better than the past two combined.

It was better than 2012, for sure. But I liked 2011 and 2010.

First, he calls Wind Waker as a bad Zelda game when it is actually the only 3D zelda trying to replicate the NES games overworld exploring the sea at your leisure without any restrictions to go from one corner of the map to the other, something that OoT, MM, TP and SS cannot do.

The NES game never let you explore the overworld at your leisure. In fact, it made a point of trying to kill you on every screen...

Not sure what Xenoblade has to do with Nintendo. Outside of the fact that Nintendo owns the studio.

Joke post, I presume?

Just made me more happy with my purchase. A ton of games you can only get on the Wii U? Im happy with that. Plus Nintendo has more franchises under its belt than any other company. Leaving out the known ones, we now have Xenoblade, Last Story, Pandoras Tower, Sin and Punishment, Fatal Frame, Disaster, Rengeki. Nintendo is going to be just fine

Games are fun.

So the Wii releases Mario Kart Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Party 8, and Wii Fit within 2 years of release and it's a commercial success.

But the Wii U releasing Mario Kart, A Super Mario 3D Platformer, Smash Bros. 4, Wii Party U, and Wii Fit U within 2 years of release and it's going to be a commercial failure?

What worried me is that I don't know if the Wii U will appeal more to the hardcore that much more then Wii did. Wii started off with a bang, Zelda, Fire Emblem, Super Paper Mario, Metroid Prime 3, Animal Crossing, and the above games. Wii U is adding a little bit more with Fire Emblem X SMT, XenoGears/Blade 2, Zelda, Pikmin, and Bayonetta, but what happens after these games release? Wii saw a shortage post 2008, I hope Wii U doesn't see a shortage post 2014.

Still, this conference has got me excited. Looks like I'm pretty sure I'll be getting a Wii U when either Fire Emblem or XenoBlade/Gears 2 releases.

Looks amazing. Good to finally see the Wii U push some limits. Maybe this can quiet some of the constant complaining about the power of the system, but that might be a bit naive :)
