What world is he living in that hardware specs can just change on the fly like that... makes me feel like they don't plan on having a hardware design finished until after they know what Microsoft has going, which would mean a real late release.

I don't think it's quite the same situation this time though. as long as they release at the same price, I still think they can release a year later

conversely, these systems are likely to be similar in specs, games, OS features. announcing second could blunt the announcement and make it look "me too".
I took this to mean he wants to see what the competition will do in terms of pricing and release scheduling, then adjusting accordingly as opposed to actually changing the specs of the PS4.

No but at least, they can have two or 3 different specs ready to be produced, depending on 720 spec announced, Sony can choose and order to produce the best spec to face 720.

Sony's goal is to bring the company back to it's former glory..
selling a cheap version of the PS3 for $269-$299 for the remainder of the year.. and being the #1 selling video game console this year would aid in that.. considering they are probably making a lot of profit off PS3 hardware right now..
Good plan, MS pushes there console out the door for X amount of cash then Sony drops there beasty in for a better price which I think thats great as long as the time difference between the 2 release dates is only a few days/weeks and not months.
Guys, bear in mind that PS3 is still selling well and easily outselling X360. That's why every week without an announcement of next gen consoles, which could possibly cut down current sales (if only by a bit) is working in Sony's favour. I'm pretty sure they already have the date of release set for quite some time.
Though the assumption that they may be waiting to see what MS does with the HDD can actually be true. I hope they release a cheap SKU with 32 GB of flash memory and a 500 GB PS4. Just let us put an internal HDD, not a USB one...
Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!
