Forums - Gaming Discussion - Final Fantasy and reboots: I have some questions

Throughout this generation, I've seen lots of shit talk and divisiveness over SE's handling of it's flagship franchise. In particular, I've seen many demands for a remake of Final Fantasy VII from people who've hated the company's recent work. I can't attest to that, seeing as I haven't touched any mainline FF games since 10 (one of my favorite games ever). But there is one thing that does bug me: why do so many people who hate SE's handling of the FF franchise trust them to do a GOOD remake?

In light of this issue, I pose some questions:

Do YOU want a remake of any old Final Fantasy games? Why or why not?
If you want a remake, do you think they can do the original game justice? If so, do you think Square WILL pull it off without screwing up anything big?

Let me know in the comments.

I don't want a remake because there's no need for it, i want a new game with exploration, traveling, depth, a coherent yet epic history, character development (i mean through the history not character progression xD) and interaction and a memorable villain, all that made Final Fantasy Final Fantasy, i don't want Final Fantasy XIII-13 and i couldn't care less how many wet dreams Motomu Toriyama thinks we have with Lightning (and by -we- i mean everyone)

mostly because of the story and the progression of characters.... they should hire good writers for the game

Wasn't a core part of Final Fantasy  is that they would reboot it with every new game in the series?  They would carry over some elements, but each one was supposed to be as different as one could get?  I guess you can take it as a sign of things going downhill when they had decided NOT to do that recently and just milk what was out there.

Honestly I don't trust SE right now with a remake to VII. It's an extremely iconic game and they obviously know it. The biggest problem I have with the new FF's is the writing. The characters are generic and the dialogue seems like something from a bad anime (And I like anime!). I think with as memorable a game as FFVII was there's no way a remake could ever meet the expectations of the fans.

FFVII was responsible for a lot of things and has a special place in many gamers hearts. As much as I would like to see a remake, I don't think it could ever be done justice.

We don't trust them at all.
But they can't do that much wrong with games that are already awesome and defined in a direction.
We all would know what to expect and they can't do funny things with it.

SquareEnix or rather Wada is on the trip that he wants the Final Fantasy Main series to appeal to the Call of Duty Community. He himself said this.He is on the same drugtrip like Capcom is with Resident Evil but there it at least makes "somehow" sense cause of Guns and stuff.
Final Fantasy doesn't but he is so hungry for those 25 Million people who buy CoD every year.

As long as this doesn't change we will NEVER EVER see another good NEW Final Fantasy MainSeries Game made for HD Consoles.
Handheld FF Games are something different cause they are usually made by other teams made for a complete different audience.Same goes for the Team Nomura that is completely focused on the Community that made them big.But those are somehow right now all Spinoff teams who get somehow interrupted the whole time.

Wada ; You want to make the perfect Final Fantasy Game for the PS3 everyone is wishing for little Mr.Nomura?Muahahaha no!You take ALL your Teammembers and fix a completely unneded MMORPG!In the meantime we make Final "AssaCreed" Fantasy Lightning Returns...AGAIN!

But with a Remake he doesn't have the space to play around.
Screw a Remake of Final Fantasy 7 up in the current state everyone is looking at SquareEnix and i can assure some angry fans will burn down the headquarters. They can't do it wrong. So it will be a good game we all know with insane graphics.

People just want something to hate on. IMO 13 was solid and 13-2 was good when compared to the other games like 6 or 7 I guess you could say they are bad but that isn't fair. I also see a lot of people who bash SE as a whole when they don't just make Final Fantasy.

But that's just it, though.

Wada's been saying lots of things. On top of wanting that sweet, sweet Activision money, other comments I've heard suggest he doesn't believe in traditional RPGs as money makers, and that SE has to risk pissing off core fans to keep FF viable. Hence his saying that he wants to see a game BETTER than FFVII before they consider a full remake. He knows that people would sacrifice their first borns for a remake with new graphics, but if he's just leading people on to keep them hopeful he's not doing a good job.

A full on remake would be expensive as hell, and Wada clearly pines for the massive COD crowd. For a project that big, do you really think he won't make any effort to reel them in? Assuming they do it at all.

Final Fantasy IV (for both the NDS and the PSP) were done well - visual wise its debatable but in terms of how they improved it from the original SNES yes it was worth it.

FFIII was great as well.

FFI and FFII done well as well.

FFTactics War of the Lions was fantastic.

All the remakes they made this gen far outdone their original games....in terms of quality imo.

Also really shouldnt compare a old version of the game to the newer version or at least I dont. I can still play FFIV on SNES even though I played the NDS, GBA and PSP versions.

I actually haven't played any of the older FF games. I've seen them on PSN...I need to give them a shot.

And I'm 100% sure people would compare a FFVII remake with a fine tooth comb. That's another reason they don't want to do it--on top of costs, they've gotten enough flak for new games in the series that don't come with such baggage.

I don't want a remake. I want a new game that evokes the same feelings the fifth-gen Final Fantasy games gave me.

We've got all these new fantastic technologies for graphics, draw distance, all this kind of stuff. Yet FF XIII shoved us down endless, beautiful corridors. That's great and all, but I never got a sense of exploration from it that the older games gave me. I never got a sense of being on this massive, huge, world-changing adventure. I'm not saying it's a bad game, because I did enjoy it, it just wasn't how I saw a Final Fantasy game.

Their attempt towards the end to open FF XIII up a bit worked wonderfully, but even then, the map felt quite small and it was basically just a Monster-Hunter rip off of running from target to target killing stuff.

Similarly, what happened to towns? In what appears to be an attempt to streamline the game, they cut out one of the features which really brought the game to life. Reaching new destinations on a long journey really felt... I don't know. Exciting. Exploring each town and seeing what problems they had to deal with, what stuff was going on with them.

It's these things that I miss most from Final Fantasy. I want to see a HD take on them. I love Final Fantasy VII to pieces, but that game still does give me that sense of adventure I loved. But I want to go on new adventures. Besides, it's still ridiculously convenient to play FF VII in its original form - it's on steam, I can put the disks in my PS3, and it's on the PSN store to play on any of three consoles. And judging by the fact that it's nearly always on the top 5 most downloaded PS1 games on PSN, it seems like I'm not the only one who still finds it playable.

Yeah I wouldnt be surprised - people even compare FFXIII to FFVII! (but in a bad way to attack XIII).

What, you mean that doesn't happen with every FF now? :p
