Forums - Gaming Discussion - Are the poor performances of the Vita and Wii U a sign of things to come?

I think to an extent it is. Vita is overpriced though and WiiU is just a tragic misstep (IMO). Vita aside, WiiU's numbers are fine so far. I'm very pessimistic about it, but so far sales are at decent numbers for an expensive launch console with few must-have games. It's too early to write it off (based on sales) although Europe is troubling.

However, I think tablets/smartphones are stealing a large share of the market, I think these half-dozen or more Android gaming devices (Ouya/Edge) will take a chunk, SteamBox, etc.

Simply put, I think the need for a dedicated gaming system is coming to an end. Games have become so mainstream you'll be able to play them off everything electronic - including directly off the TV sans console. Game consoles will become a niche device for an audience that expects too much from developers and won't be able to support the costs of the very games they demand. Everyone else will be happy with the games on offer, pretty much everywhere else.

This is just the beginning, of the end.

No, Wii U's failure will lead only to more sales for Sony/MS. I am betting on MS to get the extra sales.

I understand there is a lot of pessimism about the home console business, right now.

But PS4 and X720 will do fine, it's Nintendo who screwed Wii U.

I find this kind of opinion amazing. How can you possibly know that without any information on these consoles?!

Does it not strike odd to you that your basing your opinion on nothing?

The Wii U might need some games...

OP gets it.

The world is currently sinking into economic depression. People are very careful about what they buy. I guess that's why the mature libraries of the HD twins are attractive now.

New consoles are not only going to be more expensive than the Wii U, they also might launch in even worse economic times. Add the diminishing returns of better graphics and they might even be set for disaster.
