Well, most people with original games play online. These consoles and games are expensive, so the kind of public that buy it can afford broadband without problems. Actually, most people have broadband nowadays, the problems is how broad it is. In capitals (Rio, São Paulo, etc), it's easier and cheaper to get 5Mbps to 20Mbps. In other cities, it's a little different. I live in a city near Rio and here the maximum we can get are 10 Mbps, but it is not available at all locations in my town. I live near downtown and have 5 Mbps, but some friends of mine can have only 1 Mbps at home. It's not much common, but the broadband service sometimes is slower some days and that is simply irritating.
I play online a lot and don't have problems (except the ones caused by the low wifi signal of my router in some parts of the house, but that's a hardware problem and I will probably get a better router because of that). My friends usually play online too and I talk frequently with at least 20 people with PS3s or 360s.
Of the PS3 guys, only one doesn't play online because he just likes to play JRPGs and his console is modded to run pirate games (that is not common for PS3s, since the mods block online and you still have to download the games and put on external HDs). On the XBox side, most pay for Live. But there is around 4 people that just have Silver subscriptions. One of them is a casual player, he only has 3 or 4 games and don't play a lot. The others have modded consoles and play pirate games. Some of the Gold Live members have modded consoles too, since they allow to play online even with pirate copies.
At least the piracy is way lower now. On PS2 era, nobody, I mean really nobody, had original games. Now it's pretty common and most people have original games because of better pricing, payment conditions and more advertising.
