Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii U Problem - Adults

Wii U's launch was fine. 70-80% of Wii sales is good, and good enough to hit (or come close to) Nintendo's financial targets.  They couldn't manufacture much more than that anyway.  However, this week we may be seeing sales dip along with other consoles.  This is where we see the actual first true red flag. The reason, I think, is the lack of adult-focused software.  NSMBU is wonderful and I enjoy it, and it's enjoyed by all ages.  NintendoLand is very inovative, however its name sounds funny and stupid.  When Wii launched it had Zelda Twilight - the most mature-looking Zelda in the series and a game clearly focused on the teens-and-up demographic, and it had WiiSports - a game very adult in its presentation and focus.  Wii Sports, with it's simple polished graphics, sports theme and complete lack of characters was something cool and appealing to adults.  These games directly impacted post-Christmas sales.  At Christmas, a lot of games are purchased as gifts.  In the winter months the main purchasers are adults and those in charge of their own finances.  I believe Iwata himself had stated that they had really tapped into the adult deomographic with Wii and that solid interest year round reduced the dependance on Christmas season.  If low winter sales continue this clearly indicates a need for Nintendo to supply more adult-themed software.

Not to mention that Nintendo doesn't have many major games that don't use Disney-esque characters. That's just what they invest in.

Wii Fit U should be coming before the end of march, so they're going there. But yeah, there's currently nothing like Wii Sports in sight at the moment.

9. Mass Effect 3 (2012 GOTY)
8. God of War 3 (2010)
7. Rayman Legends (2013)
6. Portal 2 (2011)
5. Grand Theft Auto V (2013)
4. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (2011 GOTY)
3. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010 GOTY)
2. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009 GOTY)
1. The Last of Us (2013 GOTY)

Lack of mature software?? No, thats not the problem. Lack of software period. X360 & ps3 have huge libraries right now. The selection is just not there yet. I dont want games i already have on x360 or ps3. They need games and fast. As of now there are no classics on e shop either.

It caters to an adult demographics is something different to a mature rated game (that mostly caters to teens).

predict! / Can 3DS outsell PSP? / Does Vita have better 3rd-party support in 2014 than 3DS?

Bet with platformmaster918 and ethomaz about PS3 overtaking Wii in total sales.

Bet with Lawlight: How many PS3 will Sony ship over 2013. He wins if that are more than 11 million, I win if it are less.

It's not about realizing it, it's about evidence for it.  During its launch WiiU was solid.  80% of Wii is good, and good enough to hit targets.  One would assume it was selling exactly as Nintendo expected.  If sales are at 30-50% of Wii sales, that is not good enough and not enough to hit targets.
