47. Logan's run, 1976, Michael Anderson

Classic 70's sci-fi at its best. Humanity has retreated underground to live in an utopian society, however you only get to live till 30. Logan is a sandman whose job it is to take out runners, people that try to escape their fate. However after being taxed with a special assignment to infiltrate a community of runners he begins questioning his motives and finds himself on the run.
It's a little bit slow at time but it keeps you guessing what will happen next.

Life ends at 30 but the main actor was 33 when the movie was shot and 34 when the movie got released.

spurge i know this is even stupid to ask but i must :D there is one movie that is higher on my list and i have no clue what its called so i wonder if i can put it where it belongs :))

Tsubasa Ozora

Keiner kann ihn bremsen, keiner macht ihm was vor. Immer der richtige Schuss, immer zur richtigen Zeit. Superfussball, Fairer Fussball. Er ist unser Torschützenkönig und Held.

Maybe next year!

That would be too easy though.

Wouldn't be that much easier since I still would have to narrow it down from about 500 movies to 100.

Fun fact. I'm sure Ewen McGreggor was not a clone either in the Island :)

Fun comparison with The island

And another one with In Time

Where is all the sci-fi where people live for centuries...

Meh, getting snubbed once by the Acedemy Awards isn't too big of a deal.  My favorite movie music composer of all time Ennio Morricone got snubbed five times before finally getting a honary award in 2007, which is really sad since he won every other major award one can think of before that (Nastro d'Arento, BAFTA, Golden Globe, Grammy etc.).

Wow he did a lot of work, credited for 513 titles on imdb.
He made my short list 3 times with Malena, U-Turn and Cinema paradiso, sadly not in the top 50.
He got 47 awards, I don't think he's too fussed about an Oscar. It would have been nice if he had gotten it for Malena. I guess I snubbed him too for that year's winner, coming up in my top 50, oops.

Well he didn't even get nominated for some of his best work like "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly", "Once Upon a Time in the West" and "Once Upon a Time in America" (that movie missed out on a lot of nominations because it was poorly edited for the US market).

46. District 9, 2009, Neill Blomkamp

I almost dismissed this film as I was confusing it with District 13-U (original was good fun but District 13-U bleh)
District 9 was a great surprise, I hardly knew anything about it (hence the confusion) and it turned out to be rather great. On the surface you have a funny comedy about incompetent aliens getting stranded on earth. Beneath the surface it is riddled with moral issues, leading with blatent references to apartheid. The way the 'humanitarian' issues are handled in the refugee camp feels realistic and the mockumentary style fliming is very well done. Add some very convincing special effects and you have one of the best sci-fi films of the decade. Avatar doesn't hold a candle to this imo.

Couldn't agree more. Although I really like Avatar, too :)

45. Crouching Tiger, Hidden dragon, 2000, Ang Lee

As for many others this movie introduced me to Chinese cinema. After having seen many more movies like it I still think this is one of the best. I just watched it again last night and it is as great as the first time I saw it. A story that you need to pay attention to to follow, and still I feel like I should read the book to get the background for the different houses involved. The cinematography, musical score and insane live action fight/stunt scenes make this movie one to come back to. And those ancient city backdrops and great open landscapes, a true visual feast.

Also made my list but much higher.  I think its just as good as its meta score of 93/100 and truely dervered all the top ten lists it made back in 2000.
