Forums - General Discussion - Ohio school board to prevent school shootings by arming their Janitors with fire arms

So now if a mass shooting breaks out in Ohio, the custodians will be the first ones shot. Brilliant idea.

Why give the janitors guns? Give them to the teachers or put police officers in their. It doesn't have to be armed to the teeth just a few officers.

My high school had three armed guards. 2 of them were officers. I like the way Texas is doing it though. Teachers have the option to carry guns and the ones carrying are anonymous. They have to get their conceal and carry permit and take a training course. By being anonymous this means you can have 1 or 2 teachers per school and it wont be a problem if a school doesn't have any as no one would know

No, the janitors aren't sitting by the front door. They are also moving around constantly. The shooter would have to find them first. I'd be more worried about them misusing the gun being that they are janitors for a reason.

If we're going to have someone armed on school grounds, I'd much rather it be a policeman. Someone who's had more then two days of experience with a fire arm before being given one. Not to mention policemen take their jobs knowing that they might have to risk their lives. To require a janitor to make these kinds of decisions...I wouldn't feel any safer. A policemen would be a different story, so long as they aren't disciplining students.

Yeah it's similar in Tennessee except each school only has one officer but thats better than none. Guess their is a reason you never see mass shootings in Tennessee or Texas. At least not in schools.

Police only get there after the crime has been committed.  Their job is to draw a chalk outline around the bodies.  They'll run toward the sound of the gunfire...after the guns already been fired.  Unless you're going to have an armed guard in every single room of the school, at all times, your plan doesn't work.  Even then, it's no guarantee at all that a shooting could always be prevented.  All it would take is the officer to turn their back to the criminal, or have their attention diverted, and they themselves could be shot without any warning.  So it's just not a very realistic or well-thought out plan.

You countered the Police officers but what about the teachers? give 20 or so teachers a gun and that would be impossible for one or even a few gunman to target and kill as many people as possible without getting themselves shot.

Janitors are low level peons without and education who make 12-15 bucks an hour. This is stupid though I'm all for teachers carrying them.

That is quite the generalization you got there!

First of all a armed person doesn't need to be in all the classrooms. Having them would be a deterrant and if someone still proceeds with their plan to start shooting a school then the duty of the armed personel is to limit the damage. As for the person turning their back, that's obviously a possibility but the person needs to get in the school with the gun undetected first. Then they need to make sure their shots count.
