Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why didn't you want a Nintendo console or system as a kid?

I was a PC gamer through and through while still in elementary. Some of my friends had GameBoys and some fewer still had a Nintendo home console but they were all PC gamers too. I played a lot with the GameBoy especially but never owned one. I got to play a lot of SNES and N64 games through emulators. Things were different in Europe.

It wasn't until until 8th grade that I got a PS1, my first gaming console.

My first Nintendo was the Nintendo DS, and their first home console the Wii. By then I was very seriously into console gaming, so much so that thinking about it today, I practically have neglected PC gaming for 8 years.

That is my story, folks. I hope you enjoyed it.

I've found thatmany of even the biggest anti- Nintendo guys tends to have owned at least an NES and/or SNES back in the day. Their most common reason for getting out of it was that they "grew out of Nintendo," as if you can grow out of gameplay.. I never really understood that statement. If we're talking difficulty in the games, I've actually found Nintendo to have some of the trickiest games in existence, or at least old school Nintendo games.

I blame Sega for turning me into a Sony dickhead fanboy.

NES, N64, Gamecube, 360, PS3. I will buy a Wii U in the next 2 months. I like halo & the original gears was epic. When my 360 broke I was done with MS and bought a ps3. The Wii was cool but without a legit controller I had to go the HD twin route.

Nintendo makes the best games imo and I will always have nostalgia for their IPs. Zelda is my all time fave! NES was so great I will support Nintendo as long as they are around. These companies are all trying to make money but the big N tends to piss me off the least, MS the worst...Xbox live fees are a joke.

I will get a PS4 if Wii U does not take up all my gaming time.

Edit - if Naughty Dog continues to be this good, I will have no choice but to get a PS4. I own all 3 Uncharted games and will buy TLOU day 1.

When I was in elementary school, (I'm 25), Super Nintendo/ Game Boy Pocket were what was "hip" and "cool". Everyone had one, and everyone talked about the games for them. When I reached 6th grade and into junior high, N64 came out and it too became the system people talked about, albeit some people had gotten a Playstation instead of an N64 for Christmas and so even at a relatively young age the "Nintendomination" had begun to recede a little. Once N64 came out, I'd say 70% of people at my school still played Nintendo systems exclusively, and they didn't care about Crash Bandicoot or Gran Turismo or Playstation.

But I will say that I had a couple friends whose parents got them an N64 in 1996 or '97, but a year or two later they had their parents get them a Playstation. By the end of 8th grade, I'd say what was once like 90% Nintendo loyalty in my school decreased to around half that. The other half was the popularity wave of Tony Hawk, Gran Turismo, and Metal Gear, etc, and Playstation started to take over a little bit.

Played heaps of snes when I was a kid at friends houses and then my cousin got a N64 I really really wanted one. Then my Bday kicked over and my parents got me a PS1 I loved it from the word go, then spent hours fighting with my cousin over which one was the better system. Hahaha young old school fanboy rage.

I don't know my first console was a PS1 back in 1997 when I was 5 years old. I have yet to own a Nintendo Console but I have owned a Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS.

snes was probably one of the most hardcore consoles to date

Except I always wanted a Nintendo console when I was a kid.

I owned the GameCube, GameBoy Color, GameBoy SP, and the DS Lite. (Then I got a Wii on launch day... which was a nightmare!)

True story:  My dad while Christmas shopping at Best Buy in 1995 was talked into getting a Sega Saturn by an employee who was looking to unload them, and I didn't get an N64 until 1998.  Literally the only games my brother and I could play between '95-'98 were Virtua Fighter and Panzer Dragoon.  It was horrible.  We also for whatever reason skipped Super Nintendo and we went straight from NES to N64.  To this day I swear I have no idea why.

I had a NES. Never had a Nintendo console since, until the Wii. The SNES was not available in Poland, N64's games used to cost around a third of the average monthly wage in a my country, GCN looked so ridiculous with that purpule colour and rainbow controller, that I'd have to hide it when my friends would come over, not to become the laughting stock in the class, so it was out of the question.
I got the Wii cause I wanted to catch up on the GCN games and was really excited about playing FPS games with motion cotrolls. I was really hoping Wii would get many core games, just like the GCN... Yeah... Hopes... Now I'm not getting a Wii U until it drops to $150. Cause I have no hopes.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.
