times where different in 2006 it was a launch everyone was talking about 2 system sony and nintendo launching their console at the same time it was hyper hype just because of that..and now not many people do even know that the wii u is on shelves or its existence because of poor advertisment...i think ninty knew that the wii u would sell an good amount so there probably waiting for the right moment to get it started if not then they are crazy :D

Hummmmm... your post made the scenario worst.

PS3 490k with high Wii competition
Wii U 460k with no competition

lol

Having the PS3, XBox 360, & Wii at severely discounted prices with massive games libraries wasn't competition?

It's pretty clear that the economic climate world-wide in 2012 is vastly worse than in 2006, especially in the U.S..  People opted to spend less money this December, the fact the Wii U has done as well as it has...given the lack of hype & marketing, is amazing.

Taking 30k more units of PS3 sales in the U.S. as evidence of Wii U doom is just retarded.  You guys know we're still coming off the single worst financial period since the Great Depression, right?  You know that Retali Sales across the country are all down...right?

Clearly you don't.

Yup, I'm disappointed by the sales gotta admit. It ain't doomed, the 3DS was a great example. But their PR firm needs to be fired and they need a new marketing strategy PRONTO!

Indeed, they could also do with a management shuffle, particularly in America (I'm up for the role to replace Reggie, by the way )

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

wrong thread

The fact Wii U has generated more revenue than the Wii in the U.S...I admit, is a clever spin. BUT - that's not an insignifcant fact. Spending at retail was down big this December in the U.S. But American's shelled out 30million more on the Wii U.

Also take a look at Nintendo's projection of 5.5 million Wii U's SHIPPED by March 31. To hit that they have to come in at around 5m at retail. That's another 2.55 million globally in 15 weeks, or 170k / week. Totally doable and reasonable for these upcoming 3 months. So basically Nintendo's right on their projection.

Whaddya have to say about that?

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD I SAY!

It does need a price cut by the next holiday season though.

What do you expect. The Wii U will be nothing like the Wii in terms of sales. The Wii had innovation with the motion control thing. All the Wii U has is a brand new tablet that's basically a stretched controller with a screen on it.

Oh me too, I'm beyond annoyed with Reggie. Their marketing is horrible. Their commercial did not make me remotely excited about the damn thing. A commercial with the following would be if not better than what they have: ''Remember how the Wii brought your family together with laughter, joy and happiness. We are doing it again, here's the Wii U. It's got a tablet controller which allows for unparralled gaming experience (demonstrate), HD graphics, video applications and above else, your favorite video game mascot, Mario (demonstrate).'' I don't know something around those lines. They need to step it up. The price is marketable, no price cut just deliver damn.

It will be funny when the Wii U will be the best selling console next year when the masses session the 720 and PS4 will be $500 each. Only reason it is doing so bad right now is because Xbox and Playstation are so cheap. Next year when the expensive competition comes out Nintendo will seriously start to market is thing- I suppose this is the reason why Nintendo is marketing as much right now.

I don't see the Wii U outselling either the 360 or PS3 for a while.

PS4/720 will probably have the typical supply contrained/high price point early on, but these are platforms made for 8-10 year lifecycles most likely so how they start really isn't as big of a deal.

*WiiU is $300/350

As I said in the thread, a short-term failure does not mean long-term doom. Sure, it's far from ideal to have a poor start but it really means nothing in the grand scheme of things. The 3DS is a pretty great example of this. A lackluster start, yes, but then Nintendo announced big hitting games, dropped the price to cover off their rival arriving in the market, and as such the 3DS has gone from strength to strength whilst their rival well...hasn't.

I expect a similar scenario for the WiiU this coming Christmas. Release big games (Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros.?), drop the price so it's $100-150 below their cheapest rival and you've got yourself a winner.

Trying to "spin" the first month's sales either way is pretty nonsensical when there's nothing to compare it to, especially when you have no idea of it's long-term performance.

I don't think this is "spin" at all. It's fairly agreed here that the PS3 had a horrible launch even considering its price and lack of software. So for the Wii U to sell even less than the PS3 at launch is very shocking. Not only is it surprising for it to sell less than the PS3, but it did so while being much less expensive and it launched with one of Nintendo's biggest IPs. This is quite surprising and is definitely worth discussing imo.

I do agree though that its nonsensical to call the console doomed or make any declarations on the console's entire life. But the tone of your post comes across as if you're dismissing the topic altogether, which I'm sure most people disagree with.
