"PS3 was $599, far more supply constrained and didn't launch with Mario. How in the world did it outsell Wii U in its second month?"

I guess that if Sony could turn the PS3 around Nintendo could turn this around... But it's looking bleak =/

Nintendo doesn't have as much room to turn it around like Sony did. The price was Sony's biggest problem which Nintendo doesn't have an issue with. Also, Nintendo is under Ps3 so even with a turn around I'd think it would be less than Ps3 LT numbers.

Yeah, it's looking bleak... What they need is amazing 1st party games and strong 3rd party support

*WiiU is $300/350

As I said in the thread, a short-term failure does not mean long-term doom. Sure, it's far from ideal to have a poor start but it really means nothing in the grand scheme of things. The 3DS is a pretty great example of this. A lackluster start, yes, but then Nintendo announced big hitting games, dropped the price to cover off their rival arriving in the market, and as such the 3DS has gone from strength to strength whilst their rival well...hasn't.

I expect a similar scenario for the WiiU this coming Christmas. Release big games (Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros.?), drop the price so it's $100-150 below their cheapest rival and you've got yourself a winner.

Trying to "spin" the first month's sales either way is pretty nonsensical when there's nothing to compare it to, especially when you have no idea of it's long-term performance.

Hey man..you making a thread about how concerned you are about third party support for wiiu soon?

In the progress of writing an article, may post highlights or an edited version here as well though on its launch in the form of the 9th "gamrDebate". It's only fair.

What isn't fair is how overblown this reaction has been. Will this continue every single week? Why? I just don't see it, and there's only a small, legitimate reason for concern.

lol well my comment was about western support since you are usually very concerned

anywho about the whole thing..yeah it'll be fine in the long run. But this is a horrible start for the wiiu..no way to sugarcoat that one. It's not supply constrained and it's much cheaper than what the ps3 was. Time will tell how well ninty can turn things around but it's not looking good. They are being very stupid with the post launch line up of releases too. The next few months are pretty barren :S They should have used this opportunity of launching first to really grab some userbase from other consoles.

and no..only a 'small' legit reason? Come on now..you can't be serious. It's not doing too hot in NA and it's doing bad in EU...especially UK. I swear I saw a week ago or so that COD sold 300 or so units that week on the system....not 3k ..just 300 or so. Don't think the wiiu pad hook is working too well at the moment

That's it, Nintendo no more. There's no turning back. I'm expecting Nintendo to announce they're becoming a software company at this years E3.

Microsoft and Sony should become software only companies just as much! Heck, Microsoft started out only making software then they produced the garbage hardware that is xbox with its constant RROD problems. They should go back to what they used to do (I hasten to say what they're best at, because they're not even good at software), because they are no better at developing hardware than Nintendo. I'd laugh in your face if Wii U turned out better than what you are expecting it to be.

I have expertise in doomed consoles... so Nintendo needs the power of Wii U Slim .

I can see Nintendo becoming a handheld only company if this goes on. Their 3DS business is doing decent.

If you couldn't tell I was joking, but anyway not going to happen.

Doesn't surprise me. There is no hype for the Wii U. No excitement.

When the Wii came, EVERYONE was hyped. People wanted the Wii - it got tons of positive press from even non-gaming journals. The Wii U has had nothing but negative press.

The Wii U has no target audience. It's not for hardcore gamers, it's not for casuals, and barely for Nintendo fans. The Wii U is a useless console - the touch screen is extremely pointless and the Wii U is not powerful enough.

Being a weak powered console worked for the Wii because of the controller. The Wii U can't do that. How dare Nintendo charge $350 for 2006 technology! This is only the beginning. Nintendo is going to get DESTROYED this year. I thought the Wii U may have had hit 40 million units sold, but now I am thinking possibly 30 million only.

The female/non-gamer/hipster audience that embraced the Wii in 2006 has completely abandoned Nintendo, just like the Nintendogs/Brian Training crowd has completely abandoned the 3DS.

Nintendo I think bet the farm on these people showing up to their party, and it's only been their closest friends (Nintendo fans) that have shown up.

I am surprised they did. I could tell day 1 the Wii U would not attract the gamers the Wii did.

The problem is to is that Nintendo abandoned the Wii pretty much for the past 2 years. The Wii brand name went down and then the Wii U name doesn't make people think "new console," but just a new accessory to that video game thingy that's been in their attic for the past 3 years.

The Wii controller was genius and easy to get to. I still cannot figure out what this touch screen controller is supposed to do. $150 for a map screen? Huh?

The Wii U's US launch can only be described by the user aboves username.

EDIT: Fuck sake ninpie! Train wreck was supposed to be the user directly above me... >_>

This really made me laugh, I don't know why.  Bloody NintendoPie!

times where different in 2006 it was a launch everyone was talking about 2 system sony and nintendo launching their console at the same time it was hyper hype just because of that..and now not many people do even know that the wii u is on shelves or its existence because of poor advertisment...i think ninty knew that the wii u would sell an good amount so there probably waiting for the right moment to get it started if not then they are crazy :D
