I'm guessing you mean closed the gap more. Though, from what I can recall wasn't the 360 the top seller in the holiday months?

Yes it will hit that milestone. Maybe in 2017 or sooner.

Going by several posts in here, the PS2 sold ~40 million after the PS3 launched.  50% would be ~20 million.   Even with the 15% fluctuate, that's still just 23 million.  So 72.4 million + 23 million = 95.4 million.

Well 40 million was wrong. Look at what Ethomaz said. It's over 40m.

OK, we'll use your 47 million figure and your 15% fluctuation.   15% of 23.5 million = 3.5 million.    72.4 + 23.5 + 3.5 = 99.4 million.

That will not be enough to surpass the Wii's final total and obviously not the original PS's total.

With a likely reveal for PS4 in the middle of this year, I really don't even see it overtaking the Wii ever. And until more trust worthy figures come out, it still has the 360 to pass.

The only things I think could make this possible are:

1. Next-gen consoles delayed to 2014 - seems unlikely at this point.
2. Backwards compatibility / PS Classics service using Gaikai - nice, but may take away a good feature from potential PS4 exclusivity.
3. PS4 demos using Gaikai - my hoped for tactic, lets people stream next-gen game trials while not cannibalising PS4 sales. A post-PS4 announcement update to the PS3 hooking people on new PS4 exclusive IP while selling more PS3s (and more PS+ subscriptions)

This could generate the extra sales, but it's still a big gap to close.

It wont pass Wii, or the Playstation. There is also still no proof that the PS3 has outsold 360.

The sales rate for PS3 is far behind the PS2.  I think this console cycle has gone on so long that people forget how quickly sales drop when the successors hit.  If people are pinning their PS3-hitting-105-million hopes on emerging markets, I think they will be disappointed.  I don't think that 100 or 105 million is a realistic trajectory for PS3 in the next four-to-five years, and if I had to venture a guess I'd wager that Sony's own internal expectations don't show that trajectory, either.

No, it isn't really. How much did PS2 sell/ship in 2006? What about 2007? PS2 was more explosive early on while PS3 was weak and grew to be much stronger than it was.

Yeah, PS3 has had a much slower burn in terms of sales.  The opposite of the Wii and PS2.  95 is within reach, but it'll be a few years, and by then all three successors will have been released into the market, so if it doesn't hit 95 million by 2015 it never will.
